For my (non-existing) grand kids

Sunday, June 23, 2013

I had two sets of grandparents. One set were active and fun, full of ideas for goofy celebrations and kid friendly adventures. Always outdoors and usually moving and laughing. The other set were the couple that we were expected to sit in the living room with while making polite conversation.

My two sons are still teens, so when I started feeling old, out of shape and downright stick-in-the-mudish, I became alarmed. In my mid-40s I have lots of years left, I hope. It's one thing after a busy day of work and family obligations to feel like the couch is calling me. It's another thing entirely to feel like I don't want to get up. To feel like the habit of sitting is taking over my life and turning me into that person who spends her days sitting in the living room making polite conversation. That is NOT happening to me!

Not to say that my sitting grandparents weren't interesting, funny and entertaining. They were, and of course had many bits of wisdom and wit to pass on to me and my siblings. But the OTHER grandparents were the set who took us for extended vacations on summer breaks. Who took us hiking, swimming, to cookouts and parties. That's the grandparent I want to be someday. The one full of fun and adventure waiting to unfold.

So that's my reason, as much as for myself, for getting and staying fit and healthy. Not only do I want to BE here to be a grandparent, I want to be ready to GO!

Both sets of my grandparents were sedentary most of their later years. My parents are that way too, don't do much but sit around and they don't even travel much, even in their early years. When we had family reunions, they would all SIT and talk. No walking to enjoy the wooded trails at the parks. Some of the kids would ride bikes they brought or be playing. It really influenced me as I was growing up to be on the sit around a lot lifestyle. So , I know what you mean. We want you to be around to see your grandchildren too! So keep going! emoticon emoticon

I agree. As my boys are getting older I've thought about this very thing frequently.
