Thank you Spark Friends for all of your thoughtful replies to my last blog about spending too much time on SparkPeople It really makes me feel better to know I am not the only one with these concerns.

I have thought a lot about things , and I decided that what I really need is to find a BALANCE in my life. I need to spend _some_ time each day on SparkPeople, but I am going to limit it to the features that really add something to my life! SO... I am going to continue with SparkCoach, track my food and exercise, interact with my friends and maybe read an article or two. I am not going to try and earn points just for the sake of earning points. I found myself worrying that I "wasn't earning enough points" and that, for me, is a big waste of time. I also will get my kitchen timer out and set it for 45 minutes, then that will be it.

It really is part of a bigger problem with me, procrastination. Like a lot of you, I have more diet books than a library, I go to and order more diet books, exercise videos (that I don't do), I have downloaded multiple weight loss apps onto my iPad, and I go to Coach Calorie or SparkPeople or Tumblr or Reddit. I spend so much time reading about losing weight that is really ridiculous. If I spent all of that time exercising, I'd weigh 95 lbs. I am reading and thinking about it, but not doing anything about it. I am procrastinating.

So... here is to stepping away from the computer, or diet book or whatever, and actually DOING SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE! Who is with me?

We can do this!

I think this makes sense. There is much more to life than eating & food related things.
Yes, it is a big part of life since we need to eat well to live well. But obsession is obsession and it gets to a point where it is counterproductive.....binds us.....
keeps us from living fully rather than promoting it.

We have 5 senses to enjoy. There is a world out there. Becoming an active part of it and engaging in life to the fullest is where I am at right at this moment. I try to pay more attention to each moment that I am in and participate fully in that moment.
I am trying just to stay active, learning, & loving.

I am a big supporter of people honoring themselves, knowing themselves, and figuring out what works for them at that point in their lives.

I have had to seek the same balance. Although for me it wasn't points, I was in far too many team challenges and all that reporting was taking far too much time. I enjoy them, but I have to limit them because of the time spent record keeping.

Balance in everything is certainly my goal as well - reminds me of the clowns in the circus who had balanced spinning plates on the top of sticks, hoops on their arms and legs, and something else on top of their heads. That balance looks different for each of us, and I think it changes based on all the other things going on in our lives on any given day. Here's to all of us finding our own balance, DOING the things that need doing, and thinking about the things that need to wait.

You're doing great - keep doing whatever works for you!

we are in the same boat. You are right and we need to concentrate on what works, which is to fix healthy meals and get moving. I'm totally with you and am in the process of cutting back gradually.

I know I always spend time on Sparkpeople when I need motivation. Some days I need more than others.... You're right, it is all about balance. When I need a distraction I tend to clean. I feel like I'm burning calories and at the same time I'm accomplishing something and I have a clean house. Or, you could exercise. Hang in there - I know you will find the balance you need.

Well said, I think that I have had the same problem. I need to deal with just not procrastinating on the cardio and strength training -- and just doing it! And recording my food -- that totally keeps me straight. I can do the recording from my smartphone and that saves time when I am waiting somewhere for something. I have made some wonderful spark friends on here and don't want to lose those relationships. so will keep up that that as well. This is kind of addictive! But points for the sake of points -- I don't think even Spark Guy would recommend that as a lifestyle!

    I hear you.

I am a former member and with dial up it takes me 5 times longer to post and participate here. There are only so many hours in the day and a trillion other things to do apart from sparking, so hope you will find the balance you seek !
