42-year-old knees

Friday, June 21, 2013

I played basketball last week with my kids, leading me to do some full out sprinting and getting my heart rate up. It felt great, but I have to tell you, really odd in some ways -

I jumped for the ball, and it's like my reflexes/reactions to that are based on a body I had 25 - 27 years ago. So the timing would have been right if I still had the strength in my muscles to propel me to where my body thought it was going to be instead of the vertical jump of approximately 1.5" (that might be generous).

The next day when I was walking down my stairs, I heard the crinkling of cellophane.

Then I realized that no one was playing with cellophane. The sound I heard was coming from inside my knees.

Super un-fantastic!

Today I'm going to the YMCA with my son and will do some running in the pool. My eight-year-old enjoys hanging off of me as if I'm a horse dragging him through the water. As if my weight isn't enough to lug around, it actually does help me get my heart rate up if he holds on long enough for me to water-run with him.

On a different note - I'm not weighing myself today due to horrendous eating the last few weeks as if I was trying to gain weight. Instead I'm eating right and exercising, and will weigh myself in I-have-no-idea-how-many-weeks when a certain pair of my absolute largest pants become loose. And not just loose, but loose straight out of the dryer, not loose after not washing them after 10 wears.
Peace Out,

LOL! Love your humor! You should write every day and just share your thoughts. I understand completely. I was wrestling with my son several weeks ago and heard my knee pop and getting up was super painful - so much for showing him how I could keep up with him. "I can't" So, after many weeks of doing different exercises to build my knee up again, I'm finally back to walking more but I'm afraid to do planks or jumping jacks.
I wish we had a Y near us - I'd love to go swimming - it's the best exercises for us "older" folks.

That feeling of loose pants! Ah, one of the little joys in life! I know it well, but not as often as I'd like!

I love that you got out there and played basketball and I can totally relate to how your memory/mind wants to move in ways that your body isn't ready for anymore. I recently started shooting hoops with my DH and his son and, while I was quite good at it as a teen, I'm a real stinker at it now! (Though getting better, I hope!). The swimming sounds like a great way to get your exercise with no strain on the knees. Good for you for getting that exercise in and getting back on your healthy eating not-trying-to-gain plan! I love the way you put that because sometimes that's the way I eat. You'd think I was gearing up for a Sumo competition!

So sorry. Please take care of your knees. I am 84 and had one TKR March the 8th and now preparing for the second.

My knees sound like Rice Krispies. The snap, crackle and pop and have since I was a teenager. Now after putting my left foot in the stirrup and pulling myself up into saddles for 30+ years, my left knee is being rather uncooperative. Hang in there and exercise, but within reason! The pool sounds fun. I miss those days and that age! emoticon

42 year old knees. YOU'RE LUCKY!! Mine are 107.

No really. Three years ago I was abducted by aliens, they experimented on me and gave me knees that were 104 at the time, a heart that likes to freak out when it has to go above 140, my eyes have never been the same either. The worst part- THEY JUST TOOK ME AGAIN- now they messed up my ankle.

I love the pants thing. I remember not washing my work pants. I would get to work and use a bar towel with some soda water to clean them up. The best part is when I hoped I wouldn't be busy on a "Fat Day" in my should be "skinny pants".
