Kitchen Redo - NEED INPUT

Friday, June 21, 2013

Here are quick pics of our kitchen cabinet redo. I think the NEW cabinet color is definitely an improvement over the old. We are presently working on the last side of the kitchen which unfortunately has the most cabinets. We are replacing all of the wood shelves inside each cabinet as we go along as well as laying down inexpensive vinyl on top of the shelves for easy cleanup. I like it much better than shelf liner and it will last a whole lot longer.

BEFORE COLOR and HARDWARE (we tested out a new knob on one of the drawers here)

Now, we kept the paneling that runs along the top of the cabinets the same (untouched) basically because its narrow trim is the same color as the new cabinets and it also matches the paneling in the Family Room which is directly off the kitchen. My husband likes the contrast. emoticon However the more I look at it I am not so sure I do. I am now wondering if we should just go ahead and stain that area the same color as the cabinets. It is a small strip of paneling at the top of the cabinets only so I am not sure what difference it will make. If I do go with staining it I will need to do some research as I have no idea how to stain paneling.

Does anyone have ANY COMMENTS on whether to leave it as is, stain, paint, or other??? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Anyway after we're done with the cabinets and possibly the paneling on top we will paint the walls a Westminster Gold from Benjamin Moore. The trim and molding has already been painted white.

This is my inspiration picture for the cabinet color, wall, trim/molding, counter top and flooring.

Than it will be onto staining the small kitchen table and 4 chairs, replacing the counter tops, sink, mounting a microwave above the stove (are we having fun yet?), and new flooring. Yep, with DH's lack of job these days, this is definitely going to be a long work in progress but I am determined to keep this project moving forward. emoticon

I would paint it the same color as the walls.

I do not believe paneling will take a stain because of the finish. I would take the paneling off and paint it the wall cover which is beautiful. It would be a nice contrast to the dark cabinets. Of course that might be extra work because of how the paneling is on. Is it glued or nailed. I am not a fan of painted paneling either. I do love your new handles.

Good job on the cabinets. Painting the paneling the same color as the other walls will make the room seem larger an brighter. It is, after all, your choice. emoticon

I would also go with a lighter stain.

I agree with the others. If you stain the paneling dark (if you can do it) your kitchen will really be dark. I would paint it the gold or leave it the color it is. I am not a fan of painted paneling. I do like the stain you have used on your cabinets--looks really good!

Wallpaper and paneling have been out in my area for quite some time. I have to agree, if you can paint it the lighter color for contrast or leave it the same if you are not sure. Would not make it match cabinets, too much darkness in the kitchen. You have to live with it, so what ever makes you happy is what you should do.

Love the cabinet update! The look completely different/new.
I agree about the paneling, paint it with the same gold as the room is going to be.

I was going to offer the same advice as you've already been given. I don't know that you can stain paneling (I would honestly have to assume that you CAN since it's wood!), but I agree with the suggestion to consider painting it the Westminster Gold. IMHO, I think staining the wood paneling (if that were possible) would make the kitchen a bit too dark for my taste. I think the paint would add warmth to the warmth of the new cabinets. LOVE the hardware (handles).

    Good luck.

Wow, nice job! I think the paneling is nice, but it doesn't quite "match" now that the cabinets are darker. Can you maybe paint the paneling to match the walls? Staining could be an option, but like you said, I've never stained paneling (though I know you can paint over it).

Keep up the good work--it looks great!
