A... blog.

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

As I said in my last blog, WOW you guys are awesome. I can't even believe how incredibly supportive you all are. I seriously am at a loss for words about how touched I am that so many of you said you wanted to read my bio-blog. Just wow. I have never been more amazed at the support from people I have never even met. I rather expect the support for weight loss and health and stuff, after all that's what this site is all about, but MY friends are AWESOME and are interested in me beyond the health stuff. I am so lucky to have you all.

I finished a good and proper entry tonight and I'm going to share it. But first some disclaimers.

This blog is intended to explain basic biological concepts- I want to teach freshmen, non-majors, nursing and PT students, etc. Introductory level A&P, micro, general biology 101. Folks who do not have much of a scientific background if ANY at all. This is extremely important to keep in mind.

I expect everyone to have a different reaction. I've dealt with it before and it usually goes something like this. Non-science people: "Wow, you're really smart." Fellow majors/bachelor's degree: "Wow, you are the same as everyone else." Grad students: "Wow, you are a moron. Quit boring me."

I am striving to write this blog in a conversational tone- to write the same way I would talk to you if I were doing this in person. This already has turned out to be much more difficult than I anticipated. It would take me maybe 10 minutes to explain my entry tonight in person. The blog took... much longer than that.

I only have 4 entries. I am hoping it will just get better and better from here.

OK, well, I'm going to be brave now. Here is the link for my latest entry.

I am only inadvertently a hobbyist studying biology because I found it necessary for my weight loss (my real day job is computer science/mathematics!) The information out there about diet wasn't enough, so I had to take matters into my own hands! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I read all your entries, and I thought they were great! I love how detailed you are. It helps for people like me who didn't do very well in biology. Keep up the great work!

You had me at funucleic acids :)
I like that you cite your sources. This seems like a pretty fantastic way to study for the subject GRE.

I LOVE IT! You have really managed to help me understand proteins in a proper step-by-step way. I have done university courses in nutrition and genetics which touched on it (therefore I had the vocab) but I really like the way you've set things out in an understandable way. Brilliant!

I liked it.. Humorous to keep the attention and described in an easy to follow format. Course.. I'm one of the sciency people.. Only I didn't really take any bio courses in college (tho I did take biochem.. And that was my favorite class ;)) keep em coming!

You are going to be a GREAT teacher. It was a good refresher for me since I haven't had biology classes in years, but it was also funny! Kids and adults are going to love to listen to you. Good job!

So, I am one of those people who are going to say wow, you are so smart. Then I am going to say, I did not get it at all. Guess that is why I never did any good in biology in the first place. I hope you get to teach soon, you would probably be very good at it, especially with what I read in your other blog. Thanks for sharing with us.
