Every Drops Counts - It Cuts Both Ways (Blog #438)

There is much to love about a long bike ride. Events in particular have something special about them... an aura.. .an energy... a camaraderie even if you don't' really talk to many people. Today's ride in the Willamette Valley of Oregon was another one of those special times.

I did the short ride today since I have my half marathon tomorrow. When deciding to do or not to do these events this year, I found myself really wanting to do both, for different reasons.
emoticon The ride today was a mental thing. Last year was a tough tough ride in a downpour on a really freezing June day. But I had loved the location, so I just had to do it again.
emoticon Tomorrow's HM is sentimental. I ran my first HM (same venue) two years ago in honor of my mom (it happened to be her birthday) and now I do it out of renewed sentimentalism.
I decide to do both, and lucky me, both events happened to be on the same weekend. So rather than expend all my energy today on the 100-mile ride, I opted for the more leisurely ride of a mild 30. And it really was mild. I took my time, took in the sights and let my mind wander.

And a thought kept at me during this ride. We often say "every drop counts". And in pretty much every circumstance I thought of, each drop does count. What struck me is that each drop can count for good or for bad. Each drop cuts both ways.

Some times the drops do not help me at all.
emoticon Every whole milk latte gets me closer to a new pound I don't want.

emoticon Every breakfast I "forget" to eat gets me closer to being unbalanced.
... every drop counts...
emoticon Every decision to not exercise gets me closer to not fitting into my normal clothes.
... every drop counts...
emoticon Every extra serving of my favorite foods gets me closer to not being satisfied with the results.
... every drop counts...

On the other hand, that very same idea works to my advantage!
emoticon Every glass of water gets me closer to hydration.
... every drop counts...
emoticon Every mile I walk gets me closer to a distance goal.
... every drop counts...
emoticon Every healthy choice I make gets me closer to a better weight.
... every drop counts...
emoticon Every push on the pedal up a steep steep hill gets me to the top.
... every drop counts...

Bottom line: Every choice that I make contributes to what I see, what I feel, what I am. And, I already know I have strength because most of my toughest choices are when I am on my bike, running a race or walking one more mile. Amazing how much power my mind has in EITHER case... for good or for bad.

Anyways, I renewed some commitments to myself today, primarily to allow the strength of my mind that helps me make up a 10-mile hill to be the same strength that can make a better water choice and food choice.

Beautiful ride and perfect mild weather. And gosh darn it, I forgot my good camera. But I clicked two on my old phone.

This field was the feel for about half the ride. The speck you may see there beyond the fields is one of the riders on the ride. I stopped several times to take in the silence, the birds, the landscape. Serene. Joyful. Possible.

This is one of my favorite places on the ride. Covered bridges are magnificent in all that they capture. One day I am going to ride to each covered bridge in Oregon!! They remind me of a day gone by and a sense of quiet.
