Eating Clean

Sunday, June 02, 2013

When I started my weight loss journey, I began to think...hmmm, my oldest daughter (17) is very slim while the rest of us struggle with our weight. She isn't more active and she eats at home...what's her secret? So I observed her eating habits and talked with her. She is pretty adamant about avoiding artificial foods. So much so that her friends call her candy, because she won't eat any. Not that she doesn't enjoy sweets, she just wants them made only with the ingredients, butter, eggs, sugar, etc. Not boxed cake mixes.
So I researched that line of thinking and found that it is not just imaginary. Apparently, when you eat a bunch of artificial or chemically enhanced foods, you don't feel satisfied. Your body does not recognize these things as food and even makes you hungry because it expects that you just ate!
Wow! Makes total sense! We are now more cautious of what we eat and I have even begun making my own bread and even hamburger buns. You know what?!! It's true! I seem to be much more satisfied with less as long as it is fresh and home made!
Perhaps something you may want to try too!

I have long felt that eating 'clean' was far and away the best way to eat. I continue to believe that, but my life is so stressed and busy lately that I am lucky if I cook one healthy thing per week. And most of our meals lately are yoyo meals. (As in, You're On Your Own.) But I have hope that I will be able to go back to cooking from scratch and eating totally unprocessed foods...as soon as...well, not sure about that one. But it is at least a goal.

We eat gf most of the time because of my daughter's allergy which means we fix most things ourselves. I still eat some processed foods and maybe I should eat even less. She is thin like your daughter and eats some processed foods but less than me. Will try to do better this week and see what happens.

We used to eat more prepared foods - but have for years only been eating natural and healthy. It does make a difference - you are more satisfied and you don't seem to have as many unhealthy cravings like with the other stuff.

I usually cook from scratch tho not so much baked goods as the men go thru them too fast and with diabetes i can't have any. Should probably do it for my DH health. Thank you.

Enjoyed your post ... I am starting on my eating clean program this month. Hope I won't be sidetracked by the big move we are making from WA to UT but .... We have been eating fairly clean for almost a year; however, I am a 'secret' eater and I know this is what has sabotaged my weight loss goals.
