Thought and Prayer for Thursday, May 30, 2013

The desires of the world can cause us to be slaves. When we buy things we can’t afford, we become a slave to those people we owe. When we get involved with the wrong crowd of people, we could become a slave to alcohol or drugs. When we play games on the Internet or get addicted to shows on television, we become slaves to worldly entertainment. Our worldly desires can get us into trouble and move us away from God. We should choose today, and every day, to obey God which will lead to righteous living freeing us from being a slave to sin.

Romans 6:16 “Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, we come to You today asking You to free us from this world of sin. There are so many opportunities for us to become slaves of this world. Help us to turn from worldly things and choose to obey You. We know when we come to You daily and spend time with You, You will break the chains of sin and slavery to this world. We choose You today. We want to seek Your word and Your will. Show us the way that leads to righteous living. Give us strength to be obedient to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Righteous living is about doing what is right. We can only do right when we are obeying God.

Obedience to God is what we are called to do from the beginning. Anything else is sin.

God can give us the strength we need to turn from the things of the world and be obedient to Him.

Whatever is on our minds the most is what we are a slave to. What’s on your mind today?

We can replace our thoughts we have regarding the things of the world by getting into God’s word and putting our minds on Him.

Knowing that God can give us all we need, why do we continue to desire worldly things?

The things of the world can misguide us and eat away at our hearts and minds like a disease.

1 Peter 2:11 “Dear friends, I warn you as ‘temporary residents and foreigners’ to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.” (NLT)
