Money. We have to have it because even the basic things in life are not free. In order to have clothes, food and shelter, we need money. It is a necessity but it isn’t to be idolized. We should be happy with what we have and not get into debt because we want more. We should be content with the basics and learn to give to others rather than buying more for us. We shouldn’t be people who idolize money and the things it can buy instead of giving to God and worshiping Him.

Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, You are clear about what we are to do with regard to money. You give us many references and commands. Help us to know that money is a means to obtain what we need in life and a way to help others as well. Help us to remember each time we are paid to give back to You first. Give us the will power we need to keep from spending more than we make and serving money rather than You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

When we make a practice of giving our money to others who are in need, it becomes more about serving and less about self.

When we are close to those who seem to idolize money more than God, we have an obligation to remind them about His love and serving others.

Matthew 25:29 “To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.” (NLT)

Greed can easily consume us when we have an abundance of money. Planning ahead can help us stay focused on what God wants us to do with our money.

Ephesians 5:5 “You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.” (NLT)

We are told to do good and help others. A small amount of money we spend daily on “nice things” can help others in so many ways. What are we willing to give up to help those in need?

Hebrews 13:16 “And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” (NLT)
