Finding Motivation in Unexpected Places

Monday, May 13, 2013

As a kid I loved comics...Snoopy, Garfield, Archie and even superhero comics. I remember as a kid I loved Red Sonja. I don't know what exactly attracted me to her, even as a kid, except that maybe it was because we were so different. Here I am this little slightly chubby kid who was a little on the nerdy side and here she is this red-headed, tall, athletic woman who runs around with a sword in a chainmail bikini. LOL.

I think that is why I love Nerd Fitness. I had heard about it off and on over the last year or so but I really got into the website and read a lot on their site a month or two ago. Here is this website, geared towards fitness and health, that is telling me to go back to my inner child, my inner nerd and revel in it. As a 30 something adult how can you not love that?!? Use your favorite superheroes as motivation...ask yourself would they be happy with your workout. Would Red Sonja, Batgirl, or Catwoman quit at this point or would they walk away happy with their workouts? You would be surprising how motivating thinking along those lines can be.

Recently I had to reset my phone and as I was browsing background photos I found a photo of Supergirl and Batgirl combined. It was especially helpful with my upcoming Mud Run at the time. Then the other day I found this really cool picture of Batgirl in mostly black and white. She has this little smile, almost a smirk on her face and you would not believe how something as simple as that can be motivating.

Today as I would walk over to my phone to log something in from my workout it was like she was smiling at me and pleased at what I did. When I had the thought in my mind to quit it was like the smile told me... Well ok if you think you did enough then quit. If you want to look like me you need to ask yourself if you really did enough. I realized that I did have enough in me to do more and when it was done I hit over 1000 points on Fitocracy for my workout. There is something extra exciting about seeing those numbers hit over 1000.

Next time you want to quit ask yourself whan your superhero would do. It doesn't have to be a ficticious one either. Fitness superheroes come in real life versions too.
