Do you have a nickname?

Thursday, May 09, 2013

That was the question raised by Texasgidget in the W8Watchers Friends forum today.
I was about to give a quick answer, but as it often does with me, it turned into a full blown riff.
Nothing special, just Tim.

And never, ever Timmy. I cringe when I here someone called Timmy.

There are three people who have ever been allowed to call me Timmy.

Mom. Mom could call me anything she likes. She could call me Dogpoop. She's Mom. But fortunately, she has always called me Timothy. I am 60 years old and to this day if I hear a woman's voice say the name Timothy my head snaps around.

Miss Marie. She was like a grandmother to me. I never had one around and Marie was good enough. When she called me Timmy I knew I was loved. She died 25 years ago.

Miss Dot. She was Miss Marie's younger but somewhat addled sister. And it wasn't just because of her age. People who knew her said she'd had always been "different." She was allowed to call me Timmy, but never did. She called me Kevin. And I never knew why. But Miss Dot followed her sister and died five years later.

So the lesson is: Only three people have ever been allowed to call me "Timmy" and only one ever has. And she is dead. And so is her sister.

Don't call me Timmy.

So do you have a nickname?
