unexpected pleasure

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

This afternoon when I got home from work I discovered we had an unexpected invitation to go out for dinner. I decided to check my "calorie account balance" to help me made a rational decision when we looked through the menu, and I managed just fine. I've come to think of my calorie allotment the same way I do my checking account - and I don't want to be overdrawn!

I chose grilled chicken salad, which came with Texas Toast. After the waitress left it occurred to me that I could have asked her not to bring the toast, but I didn't. I'm not used to asking for food to be left off my plate, I guess.

Anyway, when the food arrived I gave half the toast slice away, and ate the rest of the toast myself. I was safe calorie-wise, and I did enjoy the piece I did have. The best part is, it was a guilt-free small treat! I don't have to feel bad about eating it, as I managed it within my calorie range, and all the rest of the day my choices were very nutritious.

Hang in there everybody - I'm living proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Isn't it nice when we start thinking of food differently. When I used to go out to restaurants, I always thought of it as a treat, which meant I could splurge. I don't think of it that way anymore. Now, like you, I check things out before I go so I can make rational and informed decisions. I try to make sure that I am in all of my ranges each day. That has helped me a lot.
I hope you had a wonderful evening and I am glad that you enjoyed your meal. emoticon

Great job! I'm amazed at the choices of substitutes when going out to eat. It does take some getting used to but many places are getting better and offering more healthy choices. We just have to ask!

Going out to an unplanned dinner -- how cool is that ? FUN !!! That is very clever to use your calories like a checkbook & keep your ins & outs in check. That's so great that you thought ahead & planned what your calories should be at dinner , made wise choices & ate well & enjoyed your evening out ! Can't get any better than that !
I'm proud of you ! Congrats on your victories last night ! You should feel great about that ! emoticon

good job - i do the same thing regarding considering it like a bank account - i call it my slush fund lol but since its hard for me to be right on point with calories since i cook a lot, i tend to overestimate what i eat, so im sure i have more slush than i think i do :)
