The first steps...

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

I have started a journey... A mission, if you will... And to me it is of the utmost importance... and to think... It all started with the kids...

I have three children. My son, who was 2 when I met him and his mother. An information absorbing ball of energy and laughter. And his little sisters, our twin daughters, who will be 2 in 17 days. I look at them running around, and playing, and giggling, and then I think of all the creaking, and huffing and puffing, and wheezing, that comes when I try to join in. I didn't used to be this bad. I used to be an athlete. I looked at myself in the mirror, and made a decision, that I would be healthier, I was going to be able to play with the kids, and be around in general for them for much longer. So late in the year last year, my wife and I started eating better, including a severe limiting of gluten, as well as much more veggies, and fruits, and less of the over-processed packaged junk that passes for food now-a-days. I felt better, but I wasn't SEEING any results, and I still wasn't able to keep up with my kids.
This year, I made a promise to myself, to be better, to get into the shape I used to be in, and stay in shape for my kids. I started by quitting smoking. Cold turkey. Put it down, walked away... Now, I won't lie, I've had one here or there since then. But usually haven't made it all the way through a single one. Good start. I have started watching my portion sizes. I tried the calorie counting, and it's helpful, but it's also harmful, as I feel horrible any time I go over my limit... So, I figure, if I'm hungry, I should eat, but I should be more mindful of my portion sizes. Still going. And now, I've started working out. For four weeks, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I have been out my front door at 3:50 am at the latest, off for a run. I've been doing interval training, using the C25K app for my phone. I've been walk/running between 1.5 and 2 miles in 30 minutes for the past few weeks. I started adding in strength training (self resistance; push ups, dips, crunches) last week.

I've lost 7 lbs. AND... today... I checked the stats for my run, and found that I was able to make it 2.25 miles in my 30 minute outing this morning. Results are starting to show, and I'm so excited that the hard work is just STARTING to pay off. Soon, my knees will stop aching, and I won't feel so light headed and short of breath from the runs... Soon... I'll be able to keep up with them. emoticon

emoticon Keep it up.. In the beginning of my journey, I used to feel really hungry when I was controlling my portion size. To help myself, I used to eat cucumber. It is very low in calorie and helps in avoiding the food cravings. Now already more than a year since I am following spark. I am really happy with the results. Best of luck emoticon emoticon
