Day 1 - Gluten Free

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

My 9yr old daughter has been dealing with stomach aches and gas for most of her life. We've been through lots of tests with the doctor - but no relief. So we have decided to go gluten-free for 4 weeks. I'm going to use my SP blog to keep track of her food and symptoms. (It's actually easier to make blog entries in SP than journal entries, other wise I'd use the journal option...)

5/8/13 Panda puffs, almond milk, strawberries. 8am: Diffused pain below belly button ("DP lower")

Wish us luck!

    Let me say:

do not do this to your daughter -- I should've read this first.

Take her to doctor for a BLOOD TEST. She must be actively consuming gluten for it to show in her blood.

If you 'de-gluten-ize' her for a month (or however long), the test will show NEGATIVE but she could still be Celiac. Express your concerns with the doctor and just get the test NOW.

If she's Celiac, you'll know and she'll never have to go through the horrors of contamination to get the test later.

If she's not, there are a bazillion other things you can rule out that will NOT require her to be contaminated to test.

Hope this helps her! I've been 99% wheat free for a few weeks and its the first spring in several years with no allergies, and yes, less gassy too. Feeling great and barely miss the stuff.

My parents went gluten free for some of my Dad's health issues. I know it is a real learning experience. When my son and I made Christmas dinner for them we made it gluten free. Good luck!
