Gardners, How do I sterilize garden soil? Help!

Tuesday, May 07, 2013

I have a small area that years ago was a strawberry bed. They died off years ago when many in my area last theirs also. Then I had dill take over. That was choked out with weeds. This area has been going downhill through the 2 hip replacements. Well, this year it is over a ft high with another type of weed.

IF I cover it with black plastic for the year, do you think I will kill the weed seeds? HELP!!!

For those members of the Home and Garden Do It Yourself on a Budget Team... I have been looking at our team Image all this time and it finally clicked. It's been a source of a chuckle and I've recently realized WHY it seemed so familiar. A year ago when I was working my H&R Block seasonal job, I got a call from my hubby. He was on our roof and the ladder had blown over. He was checking the roof because of the high winds. So, I drove the 10 miles home in the middle of my day to save him. lol He now always secures the ladder with a bungie cord.

As others have said, sterilize your soil by solarizing it. See the link from Univ of California-Davis for further info.

BR>Also, clear plastic is recommended over black plastic simply because the soil gets hotter with the clear plastic.

Hope you report back about your results!

emoticon I know you can use vinegar mixed natural stuff to get rid of weeds. I think boiling water is good for small areas? Good luck.

LOL men! As far as your garden, well, you are already the most knowledgeable about gardening I know! (I use "round up" to get rid of stuff I don't want)

Hope what ever you do to the garden area works! Weeds seem to thrive no matter what! And bugs - I gave up on gardening due to all the squash bugs that obliterated everything in my garden two summers ago. Now I just go to the farmers' market and support them - much easier for me and hey, it supports the local economy! win-win
    Good luck to you!
