Thought and Prayer for Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Often we get obsessed with others. We focus on their words and actions allowing them to consume our thoughts and attitude. Our obsession with others may be that we really like them, want to be like them or that we do all we can not like them at all. Either way, when we are obsessed with others, God can’t use us to do His will and glorify Him. When we are seen as one who is obsessed with another person, we are showing others and God that we aren’t not putting Him first. How can we fully worship God when our thoughts are consistently on someone else?

Philippians 4:8 “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, You know our hearts. You know what things we think about and talk about and what consumes us. Help us today, Lord, to look for ways to worship and think about You rather than focus on one particular person or group of people all day long. Help us to be obsessed with You and know that You are all we need. We open our hearts and minds to You, Lord. Change our attitudes and change our hearts today by allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us so we can do Your will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

When we become all wrapped up in what another person does or doesn’t do, we are losing focus on who God is and what He wants us to do.

God doesn’t want us to stay focused on one person because of who they are and what they do. He wants us to find ways to help them while staying focused on Him.

Knowing that God is looking out for us and wants us to live for Him, shouldn’t we stop worrying and allowing the actions and words of others consume us?

Idols are not just things of the world. They are people, too. Let’s be sure we are not idolizing any one thing or one person. Let’s be sure we are only worshiping God.

God tells us to think of the things in Heaven, not earth. The reason for that is that we can easily get distracted and consumed with what we think about it.

Colossians 3:2 “Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.” (NLT)
