A Well-Rounded Person, Metaphorically Speaking

Blogging -- journaling -- it's something that sustains me. But today I don't want to write about my weight, my exercise, things I eat, clothes I wear, or any of those things that seem so relevant in relation to what we do here on SparkPeople.

The thing is, we all have other interests besides losing weight. Or at least I hope we do. Otherwise we are not very well-rounded people (oops, well, I am not "well-rounded" any more after losing 55 pounds, haha!).

So what are my other interests? Well, gardening is one. The first days of Spring when the garden starts to flower are exciting for me, and it just continues through the summer as I watch the flowers in my garden bloom.

I also love photography. So, as you may imagine, I take a lot of photos of flowers blooming in my garden.

I read when I can. Right now I mostly borrow ebooks from my library system and read them on my iPad. My favourite genre is Mystery. I like detective novels, particularly police procedurals set in Scandinavia or Britain. But I am also somewhat omnivorous when it comes to literature, so I read a variety of books. I have high standards for writing, though. I will not continue to read a poorly written book, regardless of how well-recommended it is. Life is too short.

I knit as well. Mostly scarves and shawls. I took up knitting as a quiet distraction when my hip first started to pain me. Since it is so sedentary, I don't do as much of it any more. Of course, I also consider it a winter activity. Summer time is for gardening; winter for knitting.

I have always been a writer. I have kept a journal since I was 15 years old. Blogging was a revelation. Finally, an audience. I have online friends I made through blogging that I consider to be closer than many people I know in real life -- even though I have never met those fellow bloggers in person.

How about you? What are your interests outside of SparkPeople?

I'm a writer too. I had a bit of a crisis of confidence last year and didn't write anything for 7 or 8 months, but now I'm really getting back into it again.
I also love reading, and I do a lot of crafty things - greetings cards, crochet, cross-stitch and so on.
Oh, and baking! Baking is my major stress relief.

Well, I have a LOT of interests. I cook a lot (culinary degree and freelance catering, including wedding cakes), I practice martials on my own(multi-disciplinary, includes boxing), I play video games, I read a lot (including a crapload of research), I surf the web (far more than I should), and some other stuff.
I wish we could garden at my house, but the soil is clay and sand (waterfront, clayback XD). We recently started renting a lot on the military base here, that we can plant stuff in. All it is are lots of dirt, tilled up, specifically for planting. I haven't had a chance to visit it, because of exam period. I want to plant some potatoes, carrots, celery, and sunflowers. I guess I'm an earthy sort of guy. XD

We have a lot in common. I love to read and am discovering gardening. We moved into our new home last May. The previous owner had planted roses, mums, tulips, hyacinths, among other things. There is also an asparagus patch in the back. I am learning to care for roses and am looking forward to asparagus, tomatoes and green beans this summer. I like to crochet, but have never mastered knitting.
