Most rewarding medical mission trip (Oh, and I'm down 3 lbs)

Sunday, May 05, 2013

I have done several other medical mission trips but this was one of the most rewarding. On the flight from Houston to Honduras there were five other medical groups also in route, we all had different specialities, we were ophthalmic. We saw 1100 patients in 4 days of clinic and spent 2 days with an orphanage. It was hot, humid and no AC in our makeshift clinics, classrooms by their standards, filthy sheds by ours. Needless to say we went through bottles & bottles of sanitizer.
What made this trip different from others that I have done in Asia & Africa, is the hospitality of our Honduran hosts and the appreciation of the patients. After giving one small child glasses, she took off her bracelet and handed it to me, I was so touched. I couldn't begin to count all the hugs I received.
Needless to say I did not have time for my normal formal workouts and the food was brought to us by our hosts, usually protein & carbs. I did and still have some issues gastricly speaking, forgot to pack cipro. So headed to store to get lots of healthy veggies, Fruits and others and back to working out.

It's good to be home.

Sometimes it gets easy to focus on all the crappy things that are going on in the world and we forget that there are always forces of good and that every person can make a difference! emoticon

What a wonderful thing you are doing! Thank you. I wear glasses and know how terrible it would be to have none.I hope you feel better soon, the fruits and veggies should work.

Doing something like that really makes you appreciate what you have. You don't realize how good you have it until you see the lack that others live with each day and how what we see as so little means so much to someone else. I sponsor a little girl in Costa Rica. I just sent her an envelope, but haven't heard back yet. I know it will take a while. I know how much the sponsorship will do for her, but I really wish I could do more.
