Foot is Failing Me

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

I tried to do my week 3 day 2 training for the walk/jog 5k. I got through it and finished but now I have to consider staying where I am on the program. It continues on with walking 2 minutes and jogging for 3 minutes for a total 30 minutes at the end. My left foot started feeling heavy, swollen, and kinda numb at about 20 minutes into it. Same thing the other day when I did it outside. I did talk to one of the trainers at my gym. She said she does not recommend running for anyone, but it could be a number of things. A pinch nerve (OH GREAT!), or I could be dehydrated (But I drink more water than I ever did. Apparently still not enough.), or how I am landing (GRRR!). I also suggested and Kirk said it also, I don't have the right running shoes. Either way I don't want to cause injury. When it comes to the actual races I plan to do whatever I can anyway but it still feels unfair I can't finish what I started. I am not quitting out of laziness but necessity. Even so I am not quitting altogether just the program. I'll keep doing it my way to keep fit, loose weight, and stay prepared for whatever races I want to do. — emoticon feeling annoyed.

I have a few suggestions that might help. Get insoles for your shoes. Before I went to NYC, I bought Dr. Scholls Active Series insoles because past trips to the city had me walking for hours/miles on end and left my feet swollen with blisters. I bought these insoles for $20 and went to the city about a week ago and boy big difference! I estimate I walked 5 miles plus in one day and I had NO foot swelling! No blisters either :-)

Also if you are doing vigorous activity like that water may not be enough to replenish needed nutrients your muscles, ex electrolytes (which is a combo of salt and potassium). You could use sugar free Gatorade but something much more natural with no artificial dyes is coconut water. I get the Vita Coco Coconut Water. All you need is 8 ounces after a hard workout :-)
