Profile Picture

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

I received the following message in my e-mail on SparkPeople:

I got a report about some of the pictures on your SparkPage because they violate our Community Guidelines. Your profile picture is too graphic for our "PG-rated" site, and the Hitler picture could easily be offensive to other members. Therefore, I had to remove both of them.

Please keep this in mind when posting pictures in the future. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

My profile picture was of a woman with cuts on her face, bruised eyes, and her arm up to her face with stitches covering recent cuts on her arm.
This picture meant a lot to me because my niece is a cutter and every time I looked at that picture it reminded me of her and I would wonder how she is doing. I wish I would have been asked to remove it myself within 24 hours so I still had the picture.
I also have a girlfriend whose boyfriend beat her so bad she was almost dead. This photo also was a reminder of that.
I also had a picture of hitler with a saying on it. I know who complained about this. It was in my photo gallery as a reminder of how one very evil person changed the entire world into a huge war. It is beyond my comprehension of how this could occur and still is.
I also had made some comments in posts about how the Vatican helped the Nazis hide precious artifacts, monies, and other numerous items of which is well documented. The same person accused me of putting down catholics and pointed out how many people of the catholic faith helped people escape from the horrific terrors and conditions that were happening. I was not putting down the Vatican or catholics; just stating a fact. I applaud any religious faith or any people for helping people under persecution.
I wish that the people who were offended by my pictures would have told me directly that these pictures offended them instead of acting like adolescents. I would have removed them immediately and saved them somewhere else. Now they are lost to me.
My user name is 2abbynormal because I enjoy making people laugh with me or at me. I am one crazy fool.
Lately, though, I have this train of thought that will not go away. It is "good vs. evil," "right vs. wrong," "demons vs. angels," "why some people have certain conditions such as cutting, depression, anxiety, suicide," "why do people belong to religious organizations which teach love one another but are mean with other people, etc." By the way, my brother committed suicide.
All I ask is that in the future people be up-front and tell me what photo bothers them before someone takes it upon themselves to remove it without any warning.
This incident was quite sad and depressing to me.

oh my goodness that negativity train sure does get crowded. whatever happened to if you can't say anything nice..... I never saw your photos, but I am certain they would not offend me from your description. But, if they did offend me I would celebrate your right to post!!!

Here is a bit of irony for you. I received a similar message last weekend about one of my blogs. A small picture with men's behinds was removed from my blog because someone complained it was offensive. SP featured my blog, because it was voted as a popular blog post (almost 500 reader comments, and only 1 was negative). SP's mass email that was sent out highlighted the very pic that they removed from my blog! Is that bizarre or what! THEY can use the pic in a mass email, but I can't have it in my blog.

I wish we didn't have to worry so much about offending people-- one of my blogs prompted a response that I took at the time to be really mean and offensive -- but when I read it again a few days later, it didn't strike me that way. Your preception is influenced by so much and really varies. When Mel Brooks was honored at the Kennedy Center it was interesting to watch the audience. during Springtime for Hitler, the jews were all laughing with the joke -- others were worried to be seen laughing. Brooks offends EVERYBODY and everyone benefits from his bravery.
Hope you get though this easily.

I can see why the photos offended some people and I can also see why they meant a lot to you. In public websites such as SP, there are rules and sometimes they are difficult to understand. I am sorry about your sadness and most of all, I am sorry about your niece. I surely hope that she is getting support for that problem. I also hope you are getting support since you deserve it.

I hope you continue your goals here and sharing with us, and I wish you the best with SP your goals. emoticon

That is so sad! People need to get off their trips of 'being offended'!
I just think people love to claim this to cause problems.

so sorry that this happened.... we all have stories to tell about the things we think are important to us.... Some people are just to simple and lack any sense that their view of the world is the only one.

We are glad to have you here.

It is too bad you lost your pictures. Where did you upload them from? Could you retrive a copy that way?
It is important to be aware of AND follow the guidelines - this is YOUR responsibility as an adult!
