Psst, Don't tell my hubby!

It all started back in January when I was swelling up like a balloon. My Doctor made me go A.S.A.P. to see a cardiologist. Now he was a nice enough guy but let no man mess with my

He looked at me very sternly and said to me that if I kept going the way I was I would have a stroke within the year. Wow, That did shake me up. So for the first time, (I have been told to not eat salt before but never stopped) I got serious and listened to the man that said

So I got out my Penzey's catalog and ordered all their no salt seasonings. I tried and tried and disliked them all but forced myself to eat without the one thing that makes food taste so good.

OH ya, back to my love affair! After all the untouched meals that I couldn't quite get down and all the expense of salt substitute, I through it out after one taste. And all the seasonings I saw something on the computer that cought my eye. I am not sure if it was from Spark or another web site But, MY OH MY, it sure is good.

No Salt Spice Substitute


5 teaspoons onion powder
1 T. garlic powder
1 T. sweet paprika
1 T. dry mustard
1 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon celery seed

Mix all ingredients and store in tightly covered container in a cool, dark place.

It was a hint from H.

It is so good. I made egg salad with it today, also a potato salad and my hubby loved it to!

    Salt is an issue for me as well. I don't use a lot of salt in preparing and I don't salt my food but the amount in the prepared foods and frozen foods is high. Did the doctor advise you to eat all natural foods as well. My DH's nutritionist (after his heart surgery) advised no prepared foods. We were so good at first but we have been much too lax lately!

    I had to cut back on salt years ago and started raising my own herb and making salt free herb and spice blends. I really like them.

    WTG, Gail. I hate the salt substitutes and as a matter of fact, many are high in potassium, which is fine for most people, but Richard has to watch his potassium intake. I'll check out the contents of the ingredients you list and may be making my own, just like you! Like Nancy, there are some things where I just miss the salt. Love your blog!! Jeannie

    Yum ... that sounds good. I don't use much salt in cooking - it's the salt that is already in the prepared or packaged meals that is my problem! Thanks for the blog!

    I too use a lot of salt and although I have cut down I still use more than I should. Thank you for this recipe I plan to give it a try this weekend.

    Gail Hope you are feeling better, glad you found something better to use than salt it sort of sounds like the seasoning one of our hospital have and everyone likes it,

    We only use Mortons lite salt have for years but only to cook with never on the table.
    I know that a Dr scared me into taking my meds the way I should and I truly believe him that my condition was a mess without the meds. The best Dr I have ever had .

    Ohh Gail, I am glad that you have listened to your Doctor.
    There are many seasonings that will substitute for salt.
    Salt and Sugar are both so deadly ..
    Honey is a much better and natural way to go to sweeten anything and as you already know there are many other condiments to flavour your food with ...

    I am so shocked that you are admitting that you didn't listen to the doctor about the salt--until they scared you! Shame, shame! lol Good for you, Gail. I am so happy that you found something that tastes good and you'll eat it. That's my girl!!

    That is great! I am going to try that. Almost anything commercially prepared tastes too salty to me these days, but I would sure like a substitute so that DH wouldn't add more!

    I love you blog & you made me smile as I thought you were fessing up about the other man--LOL! I'm so glad you found something that tastes almost as good for you as salt. I also try to limit my salt intake and I don't even have a salt shaker here so never salt my food. I still eat too much processed food as quite often I do go over my sodium levels and no love affair with the salt--LOL! It's great to have you back on Spark.

    That is truly fantastic - I think that giving up salt was one of the hardest things I had to do - I have found other seasonings and add lemon juice to things to help, but still miss the salt on some foods especially. Have a good day tomorrow and an even better weekend.
