#riseandshine Swimming

Wednesday, April 03, 2013

So I went swimming today, which I stink at. I mean, really, really bad. There are 6 lanes, divided into 2 fast, 2 medium and 2 slow. I'm such a dork in the pool however that I think they should rename one the 'clueless' lane. First, I crawl, then, because I haven't mastered the art of breathing yet, I role onto my back and backstroke. Then I get tired and turn over and swim under water, but of course there is the breathing problem. THEN, I reach the other side and hey, I've completed a lap! After a couple of laps like this the other guy in my slow lane moved over into the medium lane. Yes folks, I cleared a lane.
I went, I swam 20 laps, I left. It wasn't so terrible, in fact I might even go back. I'm only slightly embarrassed but I'm trying not to worry about it and I'm holding out hope that I'll improve with time.
Is there an activity you persist in that you feel you're not very good at, but you do it anyway?

Thats so GREAT that you went and that you can swim 20 laps. Good GRIEF, I don't think I can swim 2 laps but I have a new swimsuit so when I finish up my current 6 weeks I'm going to find out. =)

Anything new is awkward. The nice thing about being 53 is that I'm totally comfortable being in new and unknown the pants off of being 23!

SWMBO always tell me, "You know, people aren't thinking about you nearly half as much as you think they are!"

That's how I am at running. I am probably the slowest runner I know. At my first (only) 10K, I was last in my age group. My only goal was to not be the last runner altogether. When I run as fast as I can, I can do like, an 11 minute mile. On my long runs, I average about 12.5 or 13 minute miles. I think there are people who can walk faster than I run. But... I did it anyway, like a boss. And people can just scoot right around me.

I feel much more confident about weight lifting. Only as a beginner, I feel more natural at it than I ever did at running.

I suck at swimming too. After I had knee surgery it was part of my PT, and I grew to enjoy my time in the pool because I could swim before I could walk; it was so nice to be able to propel my body forward without the use of crutches or a wheelchair! Try not to feel bad about going slow. I've cleared lanes too, and I realized after a while that most people were focused on their own workout and didn't even notice me-- I was just another buoy in the pool to them.

And yeah, you'll get better at it! :)

All that really matters is that you did it! emoticon
