A very Difficult Decision

Tuesday, April 02, 2013

After talking with a couple of different ortho doctors yesterday and spending a lot of time thinking about and researching - I have made a decision to give up running.

This is a very difficult decision for me. My hips and knees can no longer take the strain and impact - even with very good shoes. Both doctors have suggested to me that I continue to walk and ride my bike for exercise as these are easier on my joints. I will eventually have to have all 4 joints replaced, but will be able to put it off a little longer this way.

I will continue to be active, I will just be finding lots of different ways to do it. How much fun I will have finding new activities to enjoy!!!!!

Have a Sparktastic Day Friends.

Definitely sounds like a tough decision--but glad you listened to your body.
    Keep Walking!

Thanks everyone. I have been running off and on since high school - so 30 or so years taking a year or so off here and there. It will be difficult at first - especially making sure I walk instead of run, but I know that I can do it!!!

My doctor told me my bursitis (almost 3 years of pain now) was caused by my running.
My new podiatrist (a 32 year old former hs track star) doesn't even run anymore- he said it is too hard on the body.
Walking with good form - core in- arms pumping- is every bit as good as running. It just takes a little longer.

I can imagine how difficult that decision was for you. But you are right, there are a lot of other opportunities out there for exercise. Biking is a great one and gives you that high like running does. I can't wait to get back to my bike.

    Keep your chin up!

Might want to check out water aerobics. I loved doing the Arthritis Foundation exercises at the local Y until allergies to chlorine became an issue. An ortho doc recommended a Gazelle glider to me since I had problems with our treadmill and stationary bike. Walking is good. Good luck in your search.

Oh what a rough choice for you to make. How many years did you run for? Hopefully you will find a non impact sport that you can really get into as you did for running.
