Awesome Day - Ground has been Broken!!

Friday, March 29, 2013

Nothing better than a day off! Even better when the day is sunny and beautiful! I was up at 7:00 to let the dogs out, made coffee and languished in bed watching the news until 8:00, and finally got up and made breakfast. Then, out the door to tackle the garden!

The cool thing about a Florida garden is that everything doesn't need to be done at once. I remember when I was a little girl in Virginia, the garden was plowed and planted as quickly as possible, because the growing season is only from April through September. And that's cool crops through root vegetables! Here in Florida, we grow all year 'round. There are a few things that I wish I could have gotten started sooner, but no worries - There's always the Fall planting season for stuff that likes cool weather (peas, lettuce, spinach). So today, I pruned the crepe myrtle tree, tilled up three patches, and cut, removed, and replanted sod. Some of the garden area has some very nice St. Augustine grass - It would be a shame to just till it up.

So far, I got my first round of Roma tomatoes, bell peppers and egg plant in the ground today. I will do another planting in a couple of weeks so I'll have plenty to can, but I don't want them all to come in at once!

Tomorrow, I'll plant some beans, corn and carrots, and see if I can get another patch tilled up. I've still got about 4 more patches where I want to save and transplant sod. Man - It's hard work! Amazing how heavy blocks of sod can be!

Well, folks, I'm finished with my tea and ready for dreamland. I'll touch base with you tomorrow. Sweet dreams! emoticon

LOVE those DIY pics! The garden is going to be a GREAT success..just like you my friend! I can't wait to see the progression and saving the sod was SO smart of you! Love that! Happy gardening...and happy canning. My momma always canned pears (we had a big ole' pear tree) pickles and tomatoes. I never had the LEAST bit of interest in it so stayed AWAY from the kitchen during that operation. Now it might have came in useful...good to have you and google in the universe! emoticon emoticon

I can grow orchid but stink at veggies. I have wanted to grow veggies but every time I try it usually is a waste of time. I finally gave up.
You sure got a lot done

Sounds awesome! I'm in VA, so we have that much shorter growing season, but I have a pretty big garden each year and love it!
