the Gym - I Work For Idiots

Monday, March 25, 2013

Longish story.

Last year, the gym where I teach classes decided to close out its New England branches. So, the facility was bought by another fitness chain. Most of the staff was asked to stay on to help ease the transition. I can't say the change was good. In fact, I think the gym has deteriorated since the new owners took over.

Anyway, since the new owners have taken over, there has been a high turn over in staff. Desk people come and go. Why ? Not only are they paid $8-$8.50 an hour to staff the desk and sell memberships, they are expected to clean the gym too. When the new owners took over, they got rid of the regular cleaning staff. I haven't decided if that was legal or not for a facility this size.

Well, they did it. There have been many problems that have resulted in many members up and leaving. I can't blame them. I've been shocked at the lack of care the corporate office seems to have. Things are being fixed, ever so slowly. This is a company that has more money than sense. And I wonder how long that money is going to last if members keep leaving.

How does their incompetency effect me ? Why do I work for idiots ?

Continuing story.

As most of you know, I was laid off last year and still looking for full time work. I wasn't going to say anything until I was sure, but I've been working with a recruiter and I'm up for a contract job. I've had a couple of phone interviews as well as a face to face interview last week. I haven't been made an offer yet. I think I have to clear the background check first. Well, last Friday I got a call from the company doing the back ground check. They said they needed a contact at the gym to confirm that I was employed at the gym. Okay, gave them a name and number. figured that was it.

Today, I get a call. It's them again. They call me to tell me that the manager of the gym (I'll call him Tom) said I WASN'T employed there and if I had given them the wrong number. WHAT ?!?!? So, I spent some time trying to explain that the turn over at the gym has been high and the NEW manager doesn't know everyone by name. I give them the name/phone of my supervisor, but they won't take a cell number. They need a corporate number to confirm that I work for the gym.

GROWWLLLLLL !!!

So, "Tom" knows me by first name and I am on the corporate payroll. All he had to do was pull out the group exercise list and see my name. I'm convinced he didn't do that. IDIOT. Lazy IDIOT.

Anyway, I had to be at the gym tonight to teach class. I was ready to strangle "Tom". The desk people would have cheered ! Well, Tom wasn't there. He's out for the week. Fortunately, "Frank" was there. Frank is lead desk person, some time assistant manager. He's not officially the assistant manager, but he should be the manager. He's so competent. I remember when I first met him, I asked him if he was looking for a real job. Because he was just too talented to be working at this place. Yes, he too is looking for a real job. Like many people, he's just doing this to pay the rent for the time being.

So, Frank called the company doing my background check and confirmed that YES, I do work as an instructor. I hope this clears everything up. Because I swear if Tom ruined my chances at this contract job.... I will strangle him and I'm sure I'll qualify for justifiable homicide.

And that's why I work for lazy idiots who can't be bothered to actually check records. This is the person the corporation decided would make a great manager to replace the former manager who could have cared less who left for a better job. Frank needs to be made manager, but the competent people are always passed over for idiots.

Don't know how long its going to take to hear if I get an offer or not. I've been told that since the recruiter is paying for the background check, that's a good sign. I hope so.

QUICKIE UPDATE - Heard from the recruiter. the gym stuff is all set. So, we're moving along. Phew... maybe I will hear something positive by the end of the week. Fingers crossed.

That is terrible! People like that just suck...if I could just say. You deserve so much better then that. I get discouraged when I hear abotu great people like you being treated that way but the good news is...you WILL move on to bigger and better things and Tom has to live with himself forever!

Let us know about the new job! emoticon

I bet you can't wait to tell Tom, "I have no time for your demented parlor games!"
OK - I stole that quote from The Simpsons (Mr. Burns).

But thank goodness for Frank! Phew! Quick thinking on your part to get Frank to assist.

Fingers crossed! I think that's very good news that you're in the background check now. As long as they don't find where you hid the body...
KIDDING!!! I'm trying to make you laugh! You NEED a laugh after Tom's shenanigans!

Best of luck. You'll be a blessing wherever you go!

I've got my fingers crossed for good news for you on the job offer. The manager at the gym sounds incompetent -- how frustrating. But you know what, it turns out there are a lot of people like that. Good thing you are moving on towards a better future career.

You know, I bet that the place that does the background checks is a corporation also, and that a fair number of the employees behave like Tom. Hopefully the person doing your check will understand. Ugh. Stories like this make me want to keep working from home...

Good luck! I hope the position works out and leads to something more permanent than "contract."

    What?!

That's horrid what Tom did. Absolutely horrid. Was it incompetence, or was it passive aggressive? I'm so sorry that he added unnecessary stress to this situation.

Once you get this wrapped up, I'd quit anyway. There has to be a ton of other gyms around, right?

Sending my good vibes your way! I can't believe "Tom" couldn't be bothered to check the employee list for your name. He must have realized by not doing so would have created a problem for you. Well, at least you have Frank to the cushion the blow of working with such a lazy and thoughtless person.

It's about learning to dance in the rain but this is not the rain you want to dance in unless you get the job offer and can wave good bye to the gym. that is why i like my small family gym .

Tom is an infuriating, incompetent, uncaring, self-centered, narcissistic so-and-so (this is a family site, I know!), and those of his ilk tend to be an occupational hazard - literally and figuratively! - for the world's collective well-being and blood pressure. As for the workplace, ah, Karen...my heart goes out to you. All too often, we hear of greedy corporations which mushroom into power-hungry megaliths who cut their payrolls by saddling employees with work that doesn't remotely resemble that in their job descriptions.

It may be an employer's marketplace, but let this go on for another generation - if it even can - and the U.S. will have moved beyond chaos and into complete ruin...and even more widespread poverty.

You simply cannot treat human employees like 13th century serfs. It's a recipe for ultimate devastation...

Meanwhile, my fervent hope remains that you will indeed get this work you are seeking. My best wishes are with you! emoticon
