I've been training for my first half marathon for 3 months now. It WAS scheduled for May 5th...the Heels and Hills, it's focused on women, and is taking place in Las Colinas, TX. WELL...this past Sunday was the Dallas Rock & Roll Half Marathon. I had planned to go cheer on several of my friends that were running it. On Thursday night a friend and her fiancé called me to say they've decided to not run it since it was going to be so cold (35 degrees with 20 to 30 mph winds). They wanted to know if i wanted their bibs...i asked my training friend and we both said yes! At this point we've only trained for up to 10 miles. BUT a friend of mine who does these all the time told me that if i can do 10 i can do the half. He went on to say that the last 3.1 miles is all in your head...it's a mental game. So we went for it! AND...
I prepared all of my stuff the night before and woke up at 3am to get ready to leave.
It was soooo cold! I think it was about 33 degrees and that did NOT factor in the 20 to 30 mph winds. We huddled to stay warm until the building was opened up or, maybe people just broke into the building...
I will say this...i am so thankful that i have been on top of my training. And not to say anything against anyone else's experiences, but this was pretty smooth. After about mile 9 was i was getting tired. Up to this point we were averaging a 16mph pace. After mile 9 i slowed down a bit but i kept on going. All i thought about after mile 9 was that it was an easy 4 miler. 4 miles are the easy walks during the week...that was my pep talk to myself. After mile 10 i thought, "All i have left is a 5k." 5k's are easy!" After mile 11 i thought, "just 2 miles and i'm done." After mile 12 i thought, "I'm a half marathon finisher!"
I finished in 3:43:44. This was a 17:02mph pace. I knew i slowed down those last 4 miles. But today i'm at work and i'm walking around just fine. Lots of stretching, conditioning and training helped me get to this point. I'm 265lbs and i completed my first half marathon! and i feel great!!!!
My next half marathon is my original sign up - May 5th!
I am so impressed. Your willingness to get out there & set a goal, do the training & then run your big race sooner is amazing. And what a great support team to do it with you despite the cold. You SO rock! And inspire! My 1st 5K is in april and I'm super nervous about being able to run the entire 3.1...like your friend, mine said girl if you can do 2, you can dust that last 1. I am so proud of you!! I did my first half marathon 6 month after having my daughter. I trained for it in 10 days...some training ha? I felt prettry good until about mile 9 and after that point I had decided that I would rather be in labor having another child, but I kept going. I also kept telling myself that it is just a 5K left til the finish and then I can do 2 miles no problem and then that last mile was the hardest ever. I have to go past the finish line for the last loop and that was the longest loop I ever had to do in my life. I was racing the clock with nothing left to give. I had a goal of 3 hours in mind and ended up finishing in 3 hours 1 minute and 13 seconds. I want to complete another half marathon and break that 3 hour mark, that is a personal goal of mine.
