Fitness Confusion

Monday, March 25, 2013

I have been using the Leslie Sansone walking DVD's since October. I try to mix these up with the Spark People 28 Day Boot Camp DVD. Then I read that the walking DVD's may not get your heart rate up enough as your fitness increases. So am I wasting my time walking, and should I do some more intense cardio? Then I read the benefits of walking 10,000 steps a day. I do the 5 mile walk on most days, so it has to be good. I mix up the walking DVD's, as some use the stretch band or weights, and they are all at the advanced level. I have concluded that if I am sweating after 5 miles, I am on the right path.

Do you have a heart rate monitor? That way you can see if you are getting your heart rate up. You could mix in some intervals occasionally by walking up some hills if there are any in your area, not all the time, but maybe once a week or so. Getting your heart rate increased is an important part of working out too. This will help increase your metabolism and help with weight loss by burning more calories. There are some good articles on SparkPeople about this.
Just make sure you have good shoes. You do not want to have shoes that are worn down, it will lead to shin splints or heel pain.
Good luck and good for you!

any movement is good for you! Its just as you get in better shape you need to pick your exercise up a bit have you seen "mall walkers" ( underlined. the people who are moving very quickly around the mall ) compared to people that are walking in the mall. if you are treating your dvd like a walk around the mall than no you are not getting your heart rate up enough for it to be a true cardio workout it still better than not doing it and sitting on the sofa But if you are treating your DVD like a "mall walker " than yes you are getting a cardio work out. either way you are doing you r body good so no its never a waste of time to move I've been walking on the treadmill in the AM while I spark ... I don't call it exercise because I walk slow, so I can type, i stop for coffee, I stop for wash, and other things. also I'm a runner ave 10 to 15 miles a week so a slow walk for me no not a cardio workout but it beats sitting so its good!!! I call it me trying to have a more active less sedentary lifestyle your doing great keep it up

I have a small pair of hand weights I use most of the time when walking. They are very light, but I figure the little bit of resistance helps.

I use her tapes and dvd's, too. I did her 45min walk Saturday and my legs are very sore. I feel I got a good workout even though I don't sweat (never do) I feel I'm getting a very good workout.
    Keep it up!!

Walking is a good workout. But mixing it up would not be a bad idea either. You body will adjust quickly to your workouts and this is where plateaus will occur. Also, don't forget to get some sort of strength training in your workouts.

I agree, walking is one of the best exercises you can do. If you're sweating after 5 miles then you are getting your heart rate up. It's also good that you're mixing things up and doing a variety of exercises. Keep it up, sounds like you're doing great !
