How did you pick your Spark name?

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

OK...I am clearly wasting time...for sure. I have a menu due tomorrow with like seven new items on it but I am completely un motivated...(probably a bit burned out). Then I got this great idea for a blog about how I have been eating like a stray dog lately...ya' know...any chance I get...really fast...just happy to get food matter what anyone puts in front of me...while standing. :( I've been a little busy.

But I am still busy...but I felt like reaching out...maybe I will write the "stray dog blog" later...but actually I think I got the point across already and we all know it is not good! So anyway, I was thinking about my new Spark Friend "FitMary" and how her name is kind of like my name "ThinRonna" and I started wondering about all my Spark Friends names...did I mention I am a bit unmotivated? Lol! But really...I wanna know...How did you pick your Spark names?

Here is my story. When I first signed up for Spark People my Spark name was "BigFhatMama"! Oh it was! And OH I was! Quintessa used to rub my belly and tell me I was her "fat mama"! But really quickly after I joined I read something about how using a negative Spark name was ...something about how it projected a negative self image and how you had more chance of success with a positive name...something like anyway, I changed it and I went bold...since I was in no way thin at the time! So I eventually grew...or as it were...lost into my Spark name. I do think it helped me to think of myself as thin and take it all seriously. Now, I am not actually thin thin but I have a positive enough self image to keep up the good fight!

What is your Spark name story?

Great blog! I love knowing what has inspired others to identify themselves in the way they do.

My spark name came because I became a runner after joining SP. (I can't even recall what my first user name was). It's a bit cheeky (pardon the pun) like me. Nice @$$ would have gotten me an SP scolding ... and I run on asphalt and running has helped give me an improve toosh ... 50 lbs later ... hence Nice_Asphalt

Kelpie is a Scottish sort of fairy, I was a Kelpie when I was in Brownie's 'junior girl guide's" and it has been my nom de plume on several sites

This is awesome! I wanted a sparkname to reflect what type of "sparker" I want to be on here and in the real world. Less focused on the weight, and more focused on making positive lifestyle changes to be a healthy-spark.

PS. I totally love the cat vacuuming comment about wasting time. lol. too funny.

I had been an off and on runner. I was starting to run more when I joined and optimistically thought that by declaring myself a runner, I would run more and get healthier. (Like you, I "grew" into my username) My initials are PM, so I used PMRUNNER.

Mine isn't very imaginative really. I picked my first two initials and maiden name and the number "1" to reflect that it was my first name before married :) So I haven't felt a need to rename myself because I am still that person :)

The first part was named after my kitty at the time, the 2nd after a fictional character--I never changed it after kitty passed away because I thought it was more meaningful--in that my kitty would be 'reborn from the ashes'. Homage to her, in a sense. :)

Oh my! My handle has quite a history.

Back in high school, my best friend had a drum set and I had a guitar. This was back in the days when "Rock Band" meant playing real instruments, and not a video game with fake instruments. Anyway, we were trying to come up with a cool name for a girl rock band, and came up with Valkyrie. Kinda funny since neither of us have any Scandinavian origin, but Valkyries were chics in Nordic mythology, so hey!

Anyway. Fast forward to the mid 90s when the internet was in its infancy. I started using the handle "Vhalkyrie". I added an 'h' so that the common noun was more unique. The only problem is, for some reason people have trouble spelling it!

So I continued my tradition on Spark, where my name means a warrior maiden battling bad calories and weight gain. And people still have trouble spelling it. It's my MO now.

    True story.

I decided I mustn't sit around waiting to be rescued. I need to be my own hero.

Mine was my first e-mail handle, and I've been using it ever since, a play on my name. My previous trainer used to call me "kayotic" as well, when he found out, so it's really kind of a nickname at this point!

I decided on ArchimedesII for various reasons. One, Archimedes as well as ArchimedesI were already taken. eh-hem.

Two, my "people" come from the Syracuse area of Sicily. So, he could be an ancestor of mine since he was a famous resident of Syracuse. maybe.

Three, like the great philosopher, engineer, mathematician, physicist... I too do my best thinking while in the bathtub ! Eureka !

That's my story and I'm sticking to it !

On a writing team I used to belong to we called it "cat vacuuming." As in, I can't write today because I have to vacuum the cat.

My Sparkname is my old ivillage name. I wanted Ladyirish but it was already taken, so I added 317 for the date of St. Patrick's Day, 3/17.

Haha - I guess I'm just not very creative - my Sparkname is my first name + my initials. Yeah, I should have thought that through a little longer.

My first Spark name was SMILEYPREK. Smiley because someone called me that when I was a teenager and prek because I teach preschool. I decided to change my name since I didn't really like the nickname and also I don't want to be entirely defined by my job. I am hoping to be overall healthier, so that is my current name. Good question and blog!! emoticon

First of all, I'm thrilled to make it into your blog!
You've made me remember how I chose this name. I used to go on Fit Day, another fitness site that I liked very much. Fit Day. Fit Mary. When I finally tried Spark People on the urging of my friend BBK1933, I just transferred the same name. And, of course, the rest is history. I've learned so much from Spark People and made some great friends!
And I love my name too because, as you note, it's a little bit of motivation every time I log on to the site. ThinRonna is a huge improvement over your former self for that very reason. And---just for the record---I "waste" a lot of time on here, but it's not really a waste because we get so much from it. Rationalizing, I know, but also partially true!
Hang in there! We are doing it!!!

I obviously wasn't feeling all that imaginative when I joined Sparks. I signed up with my real name "Maureen" and they told me that name was already taken. They suggested "Maureenie1" I took it right away, as I just wanted to get down to the business of signing up and starting some kind of plan where I would lose weight.
