Water weight! Seriously?

First off I want to send out a possible TMI alert...
I've always put on a little water weight every month right before my period starts but I'm finding over the last year that the amount of water weight gain is quite something. I took a vacation day on Monday and my husband and I decided to go across the border to the outlet mall and go shopping.
I knew I'd put weight on and that my clothes aren't fitting quite as well as they were but shopping on Monday got a little depressing. I didn't find anything that I liked aside from...yes, another pair of shoes. I didn't spring for another pair of Cole Haan's this time. I settled for a lovely pair of coral, peep-toe, Ivanka Trump heels. But I digress...
In the morning when I put my jeans on I couldn't believe how tight they were! That kinda set the mood for the day. That evening my period arrived and when I weighed myself on Tuesday morning, my weight was down 6 lbs! 6 lbs!!! That's so NOT normal for me. I usually fluctuate by maybe 2 lbs.
My diet wasn't particularly high in sodium over the weekend so I can't chalk it up to that. Whatever water weight gain I've had always drops as soon as my period starts but I can't figure out how I managed 6 lbs worth of water.
Does anyone else experience that kind of water weight gain?
