Healthy thing I love to snack on

Thursday, March 14, 2013

I have recently fallen in love with Trader Joe's Simply Almonds, Cashews and cranberries. I seem to have a quarter cup every day. Here is the nutritional breakdown:
Calories 150 Kcal
Total Fat 9 g
Saturated Fat 1 g
Trans Fat 0 g
Cholesterol 0 mg
Sodium 15 mg
Total Carbohydrate 13 g
Dietary Fiber 2 g
Sugars 6 g
Protein 5 g
Vitamin A 0 IU
Vitamin C 1.2 mg
Calcium 40 mg
Iron 1.08 mg

They seem to provide a little too much sodium and saturated fat but but the Mayo clinic says this about nuts: People who eat nuts as part of a heart-healthy diet can lower the LDL, low-density lipoprotein or "bad," cholesterol level in their blood. High LDL is one of the primary causes of heart disease. Eating nuts reduces your risk of developing blood clots that can cause a fatal heart attack. Nuts also improve the health of the lining of your arteries. Whole Foods says this about cranberries: Among the fruits and vegetables richest in health-promoting antioxidants berries such as cranberries rank right up there at the top of the list.

As far I can tell, they are at the top of the list for something to snack on when you have the late afternoon blahs. They also have them pre-portioned.

There are no Trader Joe's near me, but I buy bags of walnuts and add them to my cereal or salad every day.

I miss not having access to a TJ's as there are none in Kansas (I lived in California one year and my sister lived there for like 10-12 years, so I was visiting Cali quite often during the 1980's-mid 1990's)...but there are places here in town that make similar mixtures. Or where you can buy the stuff to make your own ingredients (dark chocolate goes well with nut and seed and dried fruit mixtures, mmmm mmmm I'm telling ya!!).

So if you are ever stuck? stranded? or just visiting Wichita, be sure to go to the Nifty Nut House!! they even have a website... and their nuts are always fresh and tasty and oh my! going there is like getting lost in a big candy store!! oops, well I digress here, but yes, those are great combinations and nutritious and you do have to watch proportions - I do better at self moderation if there isn't as much of the dry fruit (and some dried fruits are sweetened with HFCS so I go all ape-**** on that and avoid those like the plague. The HFCS just is so "addictive" because it never satisfies my sweeet tooth and I just keep mindlessly eating it until I'm too stuffed. But if I can find something like the dried cherries or cranberries that doesn't have the HFCS, that's great. Or really, I like them tart - I wish they wouldn't add the sweetener, and let me chose a sweetener if I want, like stevia. Oh well!!

    Have a great weekend!!

I love the almonds, walnuts, and raisins mixture. Since they are not pre-portioned I have to be a bit careful.

Costco has an "energy blend" of seeds, nuts, and cranberries. I love it! Our choices are definitely better than chips and dip!

Sounds good. I like trail mix and eat that sometimes. I wish that we had Trader Joe's here, I hear so much good stuff about them. I wonder what I am missing.
