Self Discovery Milestone re: Over-eating

Monday, March 11, 2013

I went over my Calorie Range yesterday by 389 but had a breakthrough in my own Self Discovery regarding the way I usually overeat.

I had a party to attend yesterday at 2:00 pm. I woke up late (I really needed sleep), around 10:00 (which was actually now 11:00 bc of DST). AND I had to be at the party at 12:30. So, I got ready as I wolfed down a Chobani yogurt and 2 cups of coffee. As I was getting ready, I was thinking about what I would eat at the party to stay w/in my calorie range. This was difficult for me bc I knew I should eat less at Brkfst and Lunch to allow for some party food.

Then I just decided to "go with the flow"...I ate breakfast (Chobani yogurt - while a got ready) and a Luna Bar - while I helped my friend prep her house for the party). I nibbled freely and snacked without abandon...I had a few lite beers...

Here's the breakthrough: I actually tracked EVERYTHING that went down my gullet. Once I tallied the damage...2200 calories - just at the party!! I was astounded...did I eat that much?? I don't think so...well, maybe. Did I fill up on empty calories (buffalo chix dip, chips & dip, nuts, I even had a full plate of carrots and grapes) - YES. BUT I discovered I was not "hungry" for a "real" lunch or dinner even though I had skipped those 2 major meals.

The old me would usually force another meal (or 2) down bc I skipped lunch & dinner this day. I allowed myself to listen to my body and realize that even though I was not eating a "balanced" lunch and dinner, I had consumed plenty of calories and I was satisfied to not eat any more for the day. I got home around 5:00 pm and I was truly full even at dinner time (6:30 pm) - even up until 9:30 pm I was still full - I just drank a lot of water to compensate for the high amounts of sodium I no doubt consumed. When my tummy started to rumble, I drank more water and went to bed.

Now, this is not the most healthy daily eating pattern - I usually eat 3 healthy meals and 1 or 2 healthy snacks so I do not recommend this type of eating on a regular basis.

I was 389 calories over what my body burned, BUT I learned that I do not need to eat just for the sake of eating.

Here's a tally of what I ate at the party:

Miller Lite

5 ham/pickle rollups (bite sized appetizers consisting of 1 small pickle rolled up into a slice of deli ham & a little ranch dressing and cut length-wise into bite sized pieces)

Tortilla Chips 1 oz.

Buffalo Chicken Dip 1/4 cup

1/2 Buffalo Chicken Egg Roll

2 TBSP ranch dressing

2 oz Tortilla Chips

Miller Lite

2 servings mixed nuts

1 servings Nabisco Flips Crackers

3 oz. Cheddar Cheese

1 cup grapes

1 serving baby carrots

Miller Lite

Slice of Yellow Cake

Potato Chips - 1 oz.
