Old man winter

Wednesday, March 06, 2013

Okay old man winter. You win! You got the last laugh! All the complaining I have been doing about the cold and gloom. You decide to hit me with 3 inches of beautiful white and ugly brown snow and slush this morning.

All I can say is thanks! Seeing the world blanketed in white this morning was refreshing. Hopefully this was your one last shot and now you will depart and allow spring to arrive. I am not complaining that after months of dreariness I had to trudge out and tack on your beautiful white carpet. I am sorry I had to muck it up while I went to work. Knowing the kids were snug in their warm beds still since all the schools decided to take their one snow day for the past 2 years. Can’t say I blame them. I would too.

It was bittersweet walking out the door this morning. Walking into that winter wonderland. I love snow, but not so much in March. I believe in playing in the snow. Tubing down a big hill is as good as it gets. Feeling the icy spray stinging your face. Crashing in some fashion when you hit something at the bottom of the hill. Landing in a heap face down. It makes you feel alive in a way few other things do. The cold keeps you awake and alert.

So then I get to the car. Ah, a couple of inches of snow to clear off. No big deal. I have the broom. It’s a big car. Ugh, I went out at the start of the snow storm. Car got good and wet. Froze over underneath the snow . Ugh, I hate when that happens. So, pry the door open. Get the engine started. And get to work scraping and pushing snow off. And it clears quickly. Nice when that happens.

So, I get in and head out. Main streets are clear. You have 2 lanes where you should have 2 lanes. Road crews did a bang up job last night. I have been there and done that in my career. I loved driving a snow plow at night. No traffic, and everything is muted and subdued. Just your tire chains rattling rhythmically.

I love getting up earlier than normal on a snow day. I love getting out in the world when it is quiet like that. It is so peaceful and beautiful.

So, Old Man Winter. You win. I surrender to your rule of the world at this time of year. You proved that you can still pack a bit of a punch and make me wish for warmer climes. But, if it is okay with you, can we please get to spring now?

Felt like I was rambling and all over on the blog this time. But it is a rambling kind of morning for me.

Waiting for the same "old man winter" to arrive here in the east. BLAH!! I totally hear you. I have enjoyed many walks this winter in the beautiful crisp air with the pristine snow sparkling all around completely encompassed by the "sound" of winter..... just quiet and peaceful!!! very poetic.... BUT ENOUGH ALREADY!! It is March and I know we are completely exposed to many storm in March and sometimes in April as well, but I'd like to start walking with the spring blooms and mud under my feet as strange as that may sound... soon? emoticon emoticon

Oh joy. This is the most we have had in 2 years. Usually we are good for one of those 7-12 ranges. Good luck!
