Challenge question #5

Specific question #5: What can you improve upon? This question continues to build upon the theme of what habit I want to form, namely to incorporate more slow food and less fast food into my day to day eating.

It’s all about making choices – and making the BEST choices for me. I am also helping the clients I work with make the best choices for themselves (and sometimes that is more challenging).

On Monday, I made some choices at the grocery store, to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. I took some of those “freggies” to work yesterday to munch on for snacks – and forgot about them. So in addition to making choices I need to improve my memory that I made earlier choices.

I took a couple of my clients out for breakfast yesterday morning. We had previously talked about going to a diner, rather than McDonald’s. They were excited about going out anywhere for breakfast, as it’s not part of their everyday routine. We looked at the menu, and I talked them into an egg and cheese sandwich, so we steered away from pancakes and hash browns and all sorts of other sugary and greasy things. Of course, I had to set a good example, and we all had the same basic order, though we each customized our own sandwiches (with choice of bread, cheese, and meat). The meal did lack a fruit, though. We could have improved upon it by ordering orange juice (though before we left their home, they each snagged a piece of fruit to add to their already packed lunch boxes – a choice they made on their own).

I thought of a rap song I heard on a Kia commercial few years ago, and it goes something like “you can go with this, or you can go with that.” It’s about choices. And in looking for the actual song, I found the name of the original song is “The Choice is Yours,” by Black Sheep, so it’s fitting. I was planning to mention that song as a kind of theme for making choices between healthful and not-so-healthful foods. And in trying to figure out what the actual song was, I found the following YouTube clip, so I am not the only one who has thought of this:

Great blog!! I also go to the store and buy fresh freggies and then don't eat them as I should and end up throwing them away. I recently purchased the Meal on the Go kit from SP. I pack a healthy lunch and snacks - and am able to leave it on my desk at work so that I don't forget about it!

I like the part about improving your memory! I'll buy veggies at the store and then forget about them until I have to throw them out! What a waste! I need to work on that, but it's not the habit of the week for me so I'll save it for another week. I can only manage one new habit at a time!
