Breakfast with a baby spoon...

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Over the past year, I have developed a morning routine that I really enjoy! So much so, that I look forward to getting up by 5am everyday (even on the weekends!) I never thought I'd become a morning person - especially during the endless nights of crying babies and toddlers waking me up every few hours. During those LONG nights just a few years ago, I would have given anything for a full night's sleep and to be able to sleep in until 7am.

So what's changed? Since joining SparkPeople over a year ago, I've been using my quiet morning hours to read nutrition articles, keep up with my spark friends and get in a morning workout. Also, I use this time to enjoy my latte and bowl of Cheerios with flaxseed, bananas and nonfat milk (all measured out to stay within my serving sizes!) emoticon I used to eat my cereal with a large spoon, but was sad when my bowl would be empty so quickly, so I changed to a regular size spoon. That was better, but the cereal was still disappearing too quickly!

Sidenote - since having twins, meals had become a "sprint race". There was no such thing as having a sit-down meal for YEARS! I'd eat as quickly as I could, whenever I could because I was so busy caring for my twins and older daughter. Now that the kids are older and are a lot more independent, I've realized that my eating style has not adjusted - I've still got the "must stuff food in quickly" mentality. But that is changing! One of my new goals is to slow down and eat "purposely" and maybe even sit for a meal or two each day!
So this morning, in an effort to enjoy my bowl of cereal a little bit longer by taking smaller bites - I reached into the back of my silverware drawer and pulled out a baby spoon!

I totally understand what you mean about eating quickly! I found myself eating quicker, too, so that I would be done when the kids needed something or would act out. I still eat so fast that it isn't enjoyable! I need to take your advice and force myself to slow down again. The twins are 4.5 now, so I should be able to enjoy my meal more! I'm glad I'm not the only one who suffers from that! emoticon

What a wonderful idea! I am looking forward to one day having all my little ones independent enough to eat more slowly.
