BLC 17: WUB #5... and Sugar!

This week our challenges were...

Nutrition: Pay close attention to the sweeteners in your life! Refrain from sweetened drinks all week. Consider blogging about how you will or already have ended your love affair with sugar.

The only thing that I drink is plain water, and the occasional glass of skim milk, so for me, this challenge was more about considering added sugars in other products. I don't eat very many processed foods, so my intake of added sugars, for the most part is pretty minimal. The only regular exception to this is that I eat dessert every single day. And not the, "Oh, I think I'll eat these berries for dessert," kind of dessert. I usually eat some type of chocolate. A few Hershey's Kisses, 1/2 cup of ice cream, an ice cream sandwich. This week, to cut back on my added sugars, I ate dark chocolate, which has less added sugar than milk chocolate. I still ate dessert every night, but I reduced the added sugar in my diet (which is already significantly lower than the average person's) even further, so I count this as a success! emoticon

Fitness: Add stretching to your daily routine.

I had forgotten how good a nice stretch feels! emoticon

Motivation: Create a bucket list and blog about it.

I at least started my Bucket List! I think it is something that I will enjoy continuing to add on to! emoticon

Bonus: Make your favorite meal, but revamp it to be under 400 calories.

I still need to post my revamped lasagna recipe to the recipe thread, but I'll be doing that shortly, so I'm going to go ahead and say emoticon

And on to week 6!

    What a good idea for reducing your sugar! I like it a lot. I'm like you, I really don't consume a lot of sugar to begin with or eat many processed foods. Where sugar sneaks in is when I have "convenience" foods around - packs of instant oatmeal, for example. I was really dismayed to find that this pack of instant oatmeal marked as a "plain" variety (to which I was adding good stuff), actually had some sugar added to it. Ugh!

    I don't have the dessert indulgence, but my indulgence comes first thing in the morning. I hate to admit that I'm one of those people, but I NEED my morning coffee desperately now. And, although I can stomach it with just milk or cream, it's a beautiful experience with some sweetener, vanilla, and half-and-half. Mornings just aren't the same without it! However, to lighten my morning cuppa, I've replaced sugar with stevia, try to mix half-and-half with some 1% milk, and go heavy on the vanilla. It's not the same experience, but it's pretty close. :)
