There's no time like NOW

What a gorgeous morning! I went outside briefly while it was still dark to admire the clear night sky, the full moon shining in the west and the fresh snow from yesterday glittering in the moonlight. It was so beautiful and I was filled with awe and gratitude at what I was seeing. I came inside to write down my feelings before they became diluted with the tasks of the day and when I went back outside to continue admiring the view, the picture had changed; the moon had continued its path beyond the horizon and clouds were filling in the sky. I am grateful for that brief view of what's best about winter and and will take this with me throughout the day.
Over the past week, the snow has fallen frequently, a few inches at a time. There's a lot of snow out there now and it's my plan to go out and play in it today! It's been a couple of years since I've been able to get out the snowshoes or the skis. I can think of a lot of good reasons for this and a few that are not so good. We haven't been getting a lot of snow these past two winters or it's been too cold or it's too icy or I'm busy or my foot hurts or ________ (fill in the blank.) The timing was never quite right. Today, there is no reason for me not to go out this afternoon and get some playtime in the snow. I planted the idea-seed with a friend of mine but I'll go by myself if I have to. The timing is now.
Perhaps this is how many of us view our path to good choices and great lives. "I'll try to lose weight after ________." I hear this frequently at work; people say they will get serious about their health once some important life-task has been taken care of but I think we all know that the problem with that plan is that there will be another challenge waiting to take top billing and the plan to get healthy will get put off yet again.
So why wait, why not take advantage of the great timing of right now?
The conditions this afternoon won't be completely perfect for me (sunshine would absolutely be the finishing touch!) but this is the time. Tomorrow, just like the beautiful view this morning, the picture quickly will change with new challenges and new tasks.
Today is the day to take advantage of what's best about winter and what's best about myself.
