I'm not religious, but I do use Lent as a sort-of second start to the New Year, for making changes, or resolutions. I find it helpful as it has a timeframe - 40 days. 40 days is a lot more motivational than "6 months" or "this year" or "forever". It's easier to challenge yourself when you know it's only temporary and even more so when you know it's a widespread thing, that lots of people are participating in some way for the same 40 days. My Lent 'challenges' to myself are:

- to not weigh myself. At all. I did a start weight this morning and I am 9st 9lbs, or 135lbs. I will now not step on a set of scales until Easter Sunday. I swear!
- to only drink on set occasions. I've gotten into a nasty habit of drinking for the sake of it, it's pointless, it makes me feel like crap, and it makes me gain weight. So from now on I will only drink on nights out (these only occur something like once every 3 months), special occasions (Valentines Day...) and date night once a week.
- to try my best to exercise and eat healthily

That's it. No giving up chocolate, or anything for that matter (apart from the scales!), just sensible, achievable, lifestyle tweaks.
