New Week

Monday, February 11, 2013

Today is day 1 of my work week and so far so good. Of course it's only 1 hour and 45 minutes into my shift, but so far I can say I am proud of the work that I have done.
I am a 911 dispatcher.
It can be very trying sometimes, and if you do not stay positive people will bring you down. Now, when I say people I am lumping EVERYONE into that category, not just the people who call and yell and call you names. Those people can bring you down for sure, but so can the people you sit with for your shift.
I have been doing this job for almost 7 years and I don't know crap. There is always something new and I still have questions, I am always learning and I hate making mistakes.
This week I am setting goals for myself here at work. I know that everyone makes mistakes...I certainly have my own list and I know that I will be have more to add as time goes by. I know I have learned from them and can use them to help newbies when ever we get them.
1st goal is to pay more attention to the job that I am doing and not the gossip that is going on around me.
2nd goal is to be the best I can be to everyone that calls, whether it's an officer calling for something, a citizen that is calling the non- emergency line for something or a 911 call. I am going to try to do a mental eval on myself after phone calls or calls in general.
3rd goal is to not let the people I work with negatively influence the way I do my job. I will try to speak up in a positive manor and always do what my mind is telling me...not my co-worker :)

First of all, thank you for the job you do. I am sad to hear you say that people who call can be so rude and disrespectful. Second of all, I have to apologize for the 911 call my now 23 year old son made when he was in elementary school the day they taught the kids about 911. Seems he had to try it out for himself and we didn't know until after he hung up and the dispatch called us back. We found him hiding behind the couch because he thought he was going to get in trouble. Kidding aside, I have worked in healthcare for twenty six years, I don't know about anyone else in the field but I accepted the fact that learning is a good thing, makes me better at what I do and is simply part of my job and always will be. Once I accepted that, I learned to embrace it. I have also accepted the fact that I am not perfect and do not know everything. No one does and it is the people who think they do that are dangerous. And finally, I am a much happier person if I leave the gossip alone, no matter how many people are doing it. Sounds like you are setting admirable standards and goals for yourself, good for you!
