Need HELP figuring out sodium....and do I really need to worry about it.

Thursday, February 07, 2013

So I decided to start monitoring my sodium. Wow, am I surprised. It seems that anything prepared or any convenience food has a lot more sodium in it. Today I bought a side salad from McDonalds and ordered the Southwest dressing packet with it. I took it home and added my black bean and corn salsa, pork tenderloin because I had that in the fridge, and then the Texas Toast brand of tortilla strips. My sodium was in the 500's for this. Crazy

Good point: The side salad with dressing only cost $1.00

Salt = weight gain. It's maddening. It's water weight, not fat, but when you are trying to lose weight it can drive you crazy. It's possible you are not super sensitive to it. You're still losing at a good pace so I wouldn't spend much time worrying about it, as long as your BP is good. (Disclaimer: I'm not a real doctor, i just pretend; my ridiculous love of salt makes me a self proclaimed expert)

In general anything processed or convenient is loaded with sodium. It typically also has quite a bit of sugar. We all should avoid convenience foods when we can, but sometimes it's just easier.

Char, here is a great article all about Sodium... and it's affects with weight gain. The first paragraph is misleading so read the whole thing. It's only one page.

Also I found it interesting when they compared table salt and sodium in processed foods.

Char - it DEFINITELY does. You should have an in person chat with Suzanne about it. She is our expert. It's fascinating and definitely hard to avoid.

Does the sodium hold onto water therefore, your weight will be higher? Or is there more behind this thing?
