Visualizing a Successful Journey

Wednesday, February 06, 2013

Through WW, I started a success journal. One activity is to view motivation on a clock. When the hand is at 12 is when we are most motivated and most focused. As the clock hand moves around the dial towards 3, we are still motivated but losing the edge. Still doing well, but starting to slip on the things that we know work. As the hands move towards 6, we are about 50% committed and can either pick up the daily effort to move back towards highly motivated, or we can continue to move towards the 9. Once at the 9 we are off track and least motivated and not making any effort to choose healthy behaviors. The good news is, the hands continue to move towards 12, so we just need to make the choice to do those daily activities that we know we should be doing. Daily activities may be one thing to many things... sometimes it is just making that one change to increase the water, or park a little farther away to have to walk a little more, or taking a minute to write down what we put in our mouths.
This is a great visual for me personally because for the past 30+ years, I have viewed weight loss as either being “on track or off track”... motivated or not motivated. My slippery slope was definitely a rapid slide down hill. Now I can use this visual to just roll on around the clock and start the next day out with good choices and not be so down on myself for messing up. Each day is a new day to re-commit and this is what I will do. I know for a fact that there will be challenges and choices I have to deal with everyday… and there will be times that make it real hard to stay focused… for me it is usually a change in any of my routines… a loss in income (ongoing issue for us); or a loss of a job for my hubby (as in Nov 2011); or getting sick with a cold or any significant/ insignificant medical event for me or one of my family members; or too much stress at work or at home; or something fun like a vacation or a work trip… I know these things will happen. Now I can look at them and just place them on my clock... every day starts at 12am… no matter what. Every day for me can and will start at 12, I will wake up each day and realize that today I am at 12. If not at 12, I can decide where I am on my clock and make the choices to get me back to the 12.

oooooo....I like the clock idea Jean! Right now I would say I am at 50% so 6:00. I have a laundry list of things I could do right now to catch up with house work and exercise, but I just want to relax. I have not done anything negative to hurt my efforts, just at a cross road or half clock and need to get back in the right direction - thanks girlfriend!
