Two Fitbit Missteps

Saturday, February 02, 2013

Okay, two things that I've discovered about Fitbit:

-I thought it was reading the pedalling I was doing on the exercise bike, but last night I discovered that it's not. Disappointing since I do a lot of that.

-I noticed that the number of daily calories seems to run high. So, this morning, I checked to make sure that everything automatically resets to zero. Steps- 0, miles - 0, but the calories started the day at 421 before I even put it on!!! No wonder this number runs high!

Hey, sparkfriends, have a fun weekend.

The calories blew my mind when I first started using it too. I see several others have explained it (the same way it was explained to me) so I won't repeat lol. I don't look at that reading very often, I try to just focus on the total steps.

pedometers don't work well for pedaling either

The FB does not do well for cycling activities. You might consider wearing it on your pants; however, your very active activity minutes will skyrocket! (and so will you burned calories).
With regards to the burned calories bear in mind that the FB's day end at 11:59 p.m. At midnight your FB resets ALL the numbers to zero. Your body burns calories all hours of the day so when you woke up and checked the number what you saw was the amount of calories your body burned during the night. I realize this is difficult to fathom as we are trained to think we only burn calories by doing something but that is not the case. Once again, I would recommend that you take a look at the FOOD PLAN on your FB page especially if you sync your food log from SP. This will give you a better understanding of what your FB can do.
I am so pleased that you keep asking questions!

I clip it onto my shoelaces while pedalling. It is still not correct, but it is much closer.

the important thing is that you are exercising and enjoying it.

Fitbit registers calories burned for just existing. When I wake up and put mine on in the morning it usually has 400 calories already burned for me too. I've been using my fitbit for over a year and havent had any issues with this.

It also does have issues registering cycling. I wear mine on my sports bra when I work out, but others have said on different forums that if you clip it to your sock it will register better. I override my calories burned on the website when I exercise since I also wear a HRM, and especially for cycling there is generally a huge difference. :)

Too bad it doesn't register the pedalling. Hope its positives balance out that drawback! emoticon

I agree with 4 My Life's comment. What time did you put it on?
    1908 days ago
Like someone else said, it has calories burned already showing before you put it on because the cal burned number is based on the cals you burn just from being alive plus exercise.

Maybe something is off with setting. That makes no sense. I know it doesn't count the cycling.

The reason it already has calories is you burn calories just by breathing. The calories burned from the day isn't just based on movement but how much your burn by living. It is explained better somewhere on the website, I've seen it, probably somewhere on the boards.

I would think it would somehow measure the pedalling. Interesting.

Interesting. One day you inadvertantly put it in the wash, the next day it puts in extra calories. I wonder if it a subtle reminder that not all of life can be programmed. emoticon Just wondering. emoticon

There are still a few glitches but the company which has great cutomer serivceby the way is working hard to perfect it.. but like our own makeover it doesn't happen over night.
