Nights and purging

Friday, February 01, 2013

Well I'll be going in for my second night shift tonight. Its nice only working 2 nights in a row - I often get into a cleaning/purging mode between the nights. And this time is no different.

There will be an e-waste recycling event tomorrow at Kahala Mall from 8am - 2pm. Its amazing how much electronic waste we've accumulated over the years. We knew better than to just throw it out, but that also means its been building up in the corners and closets of our condo unit. We've got 3 sets of old cell phones, 7 boxes of old VHS tapes (I already contacted them and they said I could bring them by even though they don't usually take them), 2 old video cameras, an external hard drive that stopped working when my cat knocked it over, an old cordless phone, various cables and such. It'll be 8-9 boxes of stuff that leave this place tomorrow! Phew!

Of course we will also need to get my husband a new cell phone tomorrow. His started going crazy the other day, randomly calling people, it wouldn't let him do things - its been getting bad for probably a year, but a lot worse the last month. He was due for a new one last July, but he's pretty resistant to change, even when things start going haywire. But this week he knows. At least there is a Verizon Kiosk at the Mall, so we can recycle stuff, get his new phone and then grab some lunch.

The bad side of nights is that I tend to overeat, and don't exercise. I made a spaghetti squash/chicken dish the night before I started nights, and meant to bring those leftovers last night. Forgot it, so ended up pigging out on a whole bag of Chex Turtle Mix. Yup - all 1080 calories of that bag. The whole bag is 8 servings. But I did resist the temptation to run out to McDs to get a burger. Tonight I will remember my squash leftovers! LOL! It had been a while since I had cooked a spaghetti squash. I forgot how easy it is (poke lots of holes with a knife, then micro for 13 minutes), and how filling it can be - especially since I can eat half a squash with relatively few calories. I toss a can of tomatoes (stewed is my preference) and yummy. The other day I had some shredded chicken I had poached, so I tossed that in so I'd have some protein. That'll be good tonight.

Got great news for the Cystic Fibrosis Walk when I got up today. Turns out there will be an award winning high school orchestra in town and they want to play! We're working out the details, but its just 1 more thing crossed off on that list. Yea!

I've been able to get spaghetti squash at my local Safeway - Kapahulu. Now mind you that the one I just cooked I bought a month or so ago, so I haven't looked recently in the pile of squash, however spaghetti squash should be available pretty much year round. Just not sure if Hawaii supermarkets carry it year round.

Pop buys junk all the time, I make him keep it in his room now. If it's out...thats how I ended up eating entire bags of Maui Style Chips!

That Spaghetti squash sounds so good. I will have to try it.

Okay - so where do you buy your spaghetti squash? That way you prepare it sounds too easy, good and nutritious to pass up! emoticon
Bummer about the chex mix - - I've been doing that same kind of stupid stuff lately - UGH! But it will be nice to have a healthy meal that you take a long with you to balance things out a bit! I give you so much credit working nights and keeping up with the variable schedule in the first place. So it is awesome that you even do find time to exercise!!
Great news about the band who will be playing for the CF walk!
Maybe I can make it down to Kahala Mall today for some recycling, too...
