Obtaining maintenance the second time around
Wednesday, January 30, 2013
Ok, some of you know my story, some don't. I will give a condensed version here but if you want more you can visit my Spark page.
I began my journey in 2005 at 432 pounds!!! I reached maintenance in August 2009 - it took 4 years and 2 months to reach my maint of 190. However, my health was struggling and the doctor didn't know why.
In Feb 2010 I finally went to another dr and requested a colonoscopy. BINGO!!! I had the beginnings of stage 3 rectal cancer.
What I was to find out within days of this was I also had an anyerysm of the left aeorta. It measured 5.1 and nearly met the requirements for immediate surgery.
My radiation and chemo treatments began in March 2010 and I walked 90% of the time to and from.
I amazed all the doctors with my level of stamina. I had the nausea and all that comes with treatment but God's strength knows no bounds!!! He carried me the whole time.
My open heart surgery was in June 2010, which gave me a couple months to recover before my second round of chemo began.
The tumor this whole time was being monitored by my surgeon. It began as the size of a golf ball and July 1st 2010 it was the size of a marble shooter but JULY 22ND IT COULDN'T BE FOUND!!!! YIPPEE I had all the usual tests to make sure it didn't move somewhere else and it was determined NO SURGERY WAS NEEDED!!!
ELATION!!!! But I still had to do the second round of chemo - UGH
This is really where my problems begin.
The chemo "cocktail" was different the second round. One of the drugs or a combination of them KILLED my metabolism and also gave me neuropathy.
I fought the whole 6 months of this round to keep my weight down and walk.
I did manage to walk for those treatments which lasted 6 months except the last 2 weeks. The neuropathy got way too bad.
My weight was maintained and when treatment was over I hoped the battle was too. It was not to be. In April of 2011 (about 6 weeks after treatment was over) my weight began slipping.
Over the last year and a half my weight went from 190 to 265 (Jan 1st, 2013).
I have tried all my usual "remedies" to reverse the problem and get the weight off and clothes to fit.
Well, today I weigh 246.6 !!!!! My metabolism seems to be back!!!
I know, I know, this blog was a lot longer then promised. Sorry about that.
I am so excited that I am actually making progress.
Neuropathy is still a problem so that battle is not over but maintenance will be reached this year - for the second time!
