Cardiologist visit

Sunday, January 27, 2013

Friday I went for my first sonogram (?) and stress test then met with the cardiologist.
There was difficulty getting a view through my chest wall so an iv was needed to provide gas in saline solution to provide contrast. For someone who has avoided medical testing primarily to avoid needles, it was surprising. I learned through my lack of resistance, I WANTED the darn test and results.

The cardiologist came in and said, "let's get this out of the way...you have a great heart." Then proceeded to educate me on heart healthy diet and exercise as I had requested before the appointment. He indicated my personal heart range for fat burning and heart healthy cardio exercise and scheduled me in three years for a follow up. I feel really good about adding exercise to my plan now...now I know how hard I can or need to push myself without fear.

My next appointment that day was to take a functioning lung test to get an idea of where I'm at with my asthma. I was able to speak to the resp. therapist about my concerns. She strongly suggested I make an appt with a pulmonologist rather than just my pcp. My tests results indicated I have clinically significant improvement in my breathing with a bronchodialator than without. What this tells me is what I already figured out- using an inhaler daily is necessary. The down side, it was an eye opener that my lower airways are perm. damaged and if I want to be healthy, I need more education, take better care of my asthma, and most likely seek out an allergist.

Overall, it was a positive day and I look forward to getting my blood work done to find out those results!
