Because Dad Said So....

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

I visited my Dad a couple times today. I'm on vacation this week to help build the course for the Kings International CX on Saturday. If you live in the area, you should come spectate. Keep in mind, I view the term area to mean "with in the range that I drove to see the Grateful Dead". Basically, Atlanta north to Minneapolis and east to Rochester, NY. And don't give me that sissy crap that "it's winter". If I was willing to drive in the middle of winter to see the Dead in Minneapolis*, than you should get off your duff and head to Cincy to see this race and then to Louisville next weekend for CX Worlds.

Anyway, I have extra time to visit Dad this week. When I stopped by to watch Wheel of Fortune (Pat Sajak strikes me as a Bill Murray parody of a game show host...always has, always will) and Jeopardy (my smart aleck sister in Nashville sees Jeopardy an hour before us and texts us a couple answers a show just to cheese off my other sister that lives up here...I love my sister in Nashville). Dad and I were talking about his physical/occupational therapy sessions. He started telling me how much he wish he had exercised everyday in his life and that if had, he wouldn't be in a skilled nursing facility learning how to balance and get out of bed. Keep in mind, he hasn't had a stroke, just a loss of strength and balance over time that really flared up when combined with some other chronic issues. He then asked me if I had been on my bike and frowned when I said no. Keep in mind, it's 25 deg F here. Not too cold for me to ride, but most non riders look at you like you're a three headed martian if you say you ride in this weather. I did tell him that I was heading to the gym as soon as Jeopardy was over. He said, "Good", and then told me to be sure to get back on the bike...like tomorrow. He also told me to hit the gym every day.

So I got to the gym. I just hit the treadmill for 25 minutes of increasing tempo (I started at 3.3 mph and after a good warm up, would bump the speed up .1mph every 30 seconds until I was at my limit, then backed it down at the same rate) and a 5 minute warm down. It kicked my ass. For the first time this year, I felt at home in the gym. Odd.

Here's the reason I didn't get on the bike: I need to tweak it. Right now, I'm scarfing up free wifi at IHOP. When I get home, I'm getting the bikes ready. Sybil, Stewie, Blue Steel, Frau Blucher... all of them. They all shall get used frequently this year. I'm going to buy a trailer from the owner of my LBS so I can ride for groceries. I'm looking for the Aerobasaurus super special half marathon training program (I've got it printed someplace) so I can begin that for a third time. I have to. Dad said....

*DISCLAIMER: I never actually drove to Minneapolis in the middle of winter to see the Dead. The one time I drove up was late spring/early summer. However, I was WILLING to drive there in the middle of winter, it's just the Dead never seemed to be there in the middle of winter...I think...that I knew...or at least not when I could get tickets....
