My Small Goals Prove Enjoyable... and Effective!

After nearly two years of inactivity on SparkPeople, I've hit the ground running since the new year. I am going to make 2013 my year to become the healthy woman that I have always dreamed I can be.

My goals have been small. They are:
- to log everything that I eat.
- to have 20 minutes of activity each day - no excuses.
- to drink at least 12 cups of water each day.

So far so good - especially since I have been seeing small yet consistent results.

I have actually enjoyed logging my food each day. I enjoy seeing which foods I eat have the same number of calories and nutrient values. WIth the knowledge I am gaining, I am able to make decisions of what to eat before I eat rather than have to make decisions based on my caloric choices after they've been consumed.

The water has been (luckily) an easy goal for me. I drink plenty of water already, so my goal has been to drink at least 12 cups. I have chosen a smaller cup to keep me hydrated throughout the day. As a teacher on the second floor of my building, the smaller cup and my penchant to drink all day has lead to at least 5 round trips on the stairs to get more water.

My favorite goal has been to log at least 20 minutes of activity each day. However, I've made the goal a little more specific to keep me from being able to fudge, substitute, or avoid the activity. Each day, I am dedicated to walking at least 20 minutes and no less that one mile with my two dogs. The trick with walking dogs is having to stop constantly at the beginning sniffing and pottying along the way. Of course, I also have to clean up after them. So, once they're done, I aim to gain some ground. Using my MapMyWalk+ app, we log at least one mile at an average over all speed of 2.7 mph. That puts us moving at a good clip toward the end of the walk and even jogging! My dogs love the walk, and we're all getting a work out.

Each day, I look forward to fulfilling my goals because I know that I am doing good things for me and taking care of me. I am slowly but surely moving toward becoming a healthier woman and feeling good in my skin.

So, though the goals are little, I am enjoying each step of this journey!

    When I walk my dog we do intervals. He has specific "zones" where he can sniff/do his business. We speed walk between those zones. It works for us, perhaps it will work for you. Keep up the good work! emoticon
