What's your take on protein shakes?

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

I have been trying out protein powders for the last week to find one that I enjoy and doesn't make me feel weighed down. I tried two whey and they were very good, however I felt kind of slow moving after drinking it.

I tried several no whey, no soy protein powders and I do have two favorites. A couple I tried were almost unbearable and I had to choke them down. Thank goodness for sample packs, lol.

So, in my opinion, Vega One Vanilla Chi was unbelievably good, however it only has 15g of protein and, for me, is not enough. I decided to go with Plant Fusion Vanilla Bean and it is very good as well. Plant fusion has 21g of protein, a little better. I make smoothies containing the protein powder, unsweetened coconut milk, ground flax seed meal and frozen fruit...very yummy!

The no whey, no soy option has made me a lot more comfortable about what I'm consuming. I don't know why but whey seems to disagree with me, probably due to an intolerance or something like that.

Curious about others experience with protein powders, either kind. And has anyone else found an alternative to the whey/soy powders that works well for you?

Plant Fusion is the best!! Great on so many levels... I also use Liquid Collagen Protein-great for firmer skin, and good for joints.... still use some whey though....only because I strength train heavily and use as a post-workout shake emoticon

I do hemp protein. Mostly in smoothies though.

This may be TMI but I can't have whey shakes because it blocks my system if I drink them 2 days in a row. My favorite is Trader Joe's quick dissolve unflavored soy protein. My back-up is Genisoy unflavored. Neither seems to bog me down and both blend pretty well. I like that they add body to my smoothie in addition to giving me more protein. In a pinch I can throw TJs powder in a bottle of fruit juice, shake and have a decent quick smoothie, although it does clump a little. It's not gritty at all.

I make an imitation Starbucks chocolate banana smoothie most days. Another favorite, and an odd one, is a Green Power smoothie with 1/2 avocado, green apple, banana, ginger, spinach and a twist of lime. I only use half a serving of powder for the green smoothie.

DH gets the regular whey -- he likes chocolate -- and does the same mix as you except he adds chia seeds and psyllium husks .... he also grinds them up in the coffee grinder along with the flaxseed .... we keep the bananas frozen and put in the frozen berries & bananas and he uses pure cherry juice for his arthritis .... he also adds omega 3-6-9 capsule (he punctures it and squeezes the juice in it) -- needless to say he has a lot of protein and fiber which has helped him a whole lot.
