1/21/13: Chemistry Rambling / Daily Recap.

Monday, January 21, 2013

I spent all day yesterday and today working on homework for the week. I finished my ochem homework- everything graded due on Friday plus the additional practice worksheets and online practice. I still have to do the book work practice (not graded, just for practice), but I am probably going to do that closer to the test date. I'm finding I really do like ochem. I knew that last term, but I was so busy with other courses that were more memorization and busy-work that I didn't have the time to just sit down and enjoy chemistry.

I also finished all of my quant homework for the week- nothing too difficult, just some conversions, error propagation, significant figures. Number work, basically. I wrote out what all I have to do for school this week, and basically... all I have left is lab preparations. Quant lab tomorrow should be a breeze. It's just a review of statistical analysis... The only thing to do is then finish the report for next week. Thursday I just need to have my lab notebook prepped for the characterization tests, which I am so excited about.

We got the proton NMRs yesterday I believe, and it was just perfectly on queue with 3-hexanone. Despite all of our spectra being absolutely perfect, we still need to do 4 tests- so we decided we're going to do this one test (2,4-dinitophenylhydrazine test) to show that yes, it is either a ketone or an aldehyde, and then do a chromic acid or silver mirror test, either of which should give negative results indication ketone instead of aldehyde... and from there on, it's just where is the ketone? So.. iodoform test to determine that it is indeed on carbon 3 instead of carbon 2 (negative result expected). Probably add in a flame test so one of my lab partners can play with fire to further confirm the ketone, and use the BP and RI to determine the rest. Anyway, I'm mega excited for this! We are going to meet up sometime this week to prep lab books and talk about what synthesis we want to do- we figure, the earlier we do this, the earlier we finish with the whole lab... which means no 8AM Thursday labs for m!

Since I've just been totally sedentary most of today and yesterday (that's what being home working on homework does) my calorie burn is slightly lower... and I did do the SparkVideos for the January Jumpstart. I also attempted to do a pull up and that was... ridiculously difficult. Rob said he would help me get stronger, because I really do want to learn how to climb and be able to keep up with him and maybe someday even James!

I've had ~900 calories. I made Top Ramen, which is possibly the least healthy noodles ever, but hey- college kid. I wanted it, and it's mega cheap, and it's okay once in a while... but I had half of it at lunch and half just now because it fills me up way too much.

Been upping up my water intake because of how cold and dry it is, hoping I don't get dehydrated. Sister and her boyfriend have been out of the apartment most of the day for their anniversary, so I'm pretty happy today. Loved having this day off of classes!
