Challenge mileage update!

Friday, January 18, 2013

WHEW. This is going to be harder than I thought....

When I picked this challenge I wasn't 100% for sure going on vacation yet, so I kind of forgot about it. Now it's official, so I have 7 weeks instead of 8 to get my 21 miles in.

It's proving to be challenging mostly because of my other schedule things: Still going to the non-pool gym with husby Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the early morning (unless I'm early shift at work, like today!), and physical therapy 2-3 times a week, which I also like to do early in the morning so I don't have to take off work time.

The pool limit (30 minutes per person, unless no one is waiting) is a complication since all that morning stuff has pushed me to evening swims, and more people come in the evening. If I make it to the pool at 6am, like I'd prefer, I usually have the place to myself! If I have to get out after 30 minutes to let someone else have a turn, I usually will have done enough laps to make the challenge in 8 weeks, but not enough to meet it in 7. That means adding another day of swimming to my week!

I will get it done, I just will have to really push. Fortunately I love swimming so I've been getting it in. This morning I had to be at work early so I only had time for 20 laps, sniffle sniffle. I'm hoping to get in another 30 tonight!

Including tonight's planned 30 laps will be:

295 laps done = 5.48 miles. That's the red arrow.
I plan to swim tomorrow morning as well, so if I get in my planned laps tomorrow morning I'll be at the grey arrow - 335 laps, 6.22 miles.

Here I am:

My weight is still just sitting at 257. I was 256.9 this morning, but that's the same thing. I've seen 260 or 259 a couple times but always back down to 257 the next day. I have been hungrier from all the swimming, so I am eating more, but that's mostly due to poor planning. I could satisfy that hunger within my calorie range, I just need to get more raw veggies in. I'm planning to focus on that this coming week.

I was looking at my charts again, and even though the tracker is screaming at me that I'm burning too many calories/eating too little, I think I'm actually eating a little too much. In December my average calories eaten was on track with November and October, but my average calorie burn was higher than January is so far. (December was great, so it's a good benchmark I think.)

So far in January my average calories eaten is 200-300 higher than December! This could be why I'm stalling? I'm going to try to bring the calories eaten average back down, and the burned will go up automatically as the challenge proceeds. I'll see where that leaves me at the end of January and re-assess.

Water and veggies are not as good as December so that could be part of it, too. Gotta work on that!

Have a great weekend, sparklies!

This is fascinating! I've never seen a distance SWIM challenge. What a great idea! Is this a website or something you worked out yourself?

I have read weight loss is 80-90% what we eat, and only 10-20% exercise. (many people think it's 50/50, but it's not)
Now exercise is sooo important for so many thing: blood pressure, blood sugar, mood, muscle tone, joint health, heart health and even brain activity..
But to successfully lose weight, we need to get a good balance of calories, eat too much, the weight stays, AND if we eat way too little, our body won't give up excess fat either.

So keep watching your trackers and re-evaluating so you can get the right balance for you.

Great work with all the exercise by the way, that is awesome!

You can do it! You come up with such cool challenges for yourself. I'm not good at anything like that. I'm thrilled with myself when I manage to stick with anything for a few weeks, lol. I was ecstatic when I made it through the whole 8 weeks of water fitness class (even though I missed some). I think I'm going to try getting to the pool again as soon as the weather clears up a little. It snowed and was slick today-so I got to wear my broomball shoes from my Mother-in-law! She is another awesome person.

Have a great weekend! Oh, and tell them at your pool that you're swimming laps for me, so you get an extra half hour emoticon
