The Gym - Day One

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Oh my goodness, was I ever pumped to be back at the gym tonight! I missed it so much! Eeee! I actually did about 17 minutes on the treadmill at 3.5 mph, no incline, and I was comfortable. My knee wasn't hurting or anything, so I was super stoked! I was going to go to 20 minutes, but I wanted to get back into the weight room.

However, I was totally bummed when I saw a code padlock on the Women's Only Weight Room door! I asked the receptionist and he said that the room was going under construction, and it could only be used if I signed up for a class that cost $30. I thought that was so crappy since the main reason I joined that place was for the private weight room. Oh yeah, he also didn't know when it would be functioning again. Boo-urns.

Anyway, I went back down and asked my husband to come check out the guy's weight room. I was so nervous being in that room because it's so big, and there are so many machines! I was really overwhelmed. I didn't really recognize a lot of the machines because they looked different from the women's, and I don't think my nervousness helped. I was also grossed out by some of the guys because they were all sweaty and not wiping anything down, and some guy was sitting on the windowsill picking his nose. Gross.

Pete could tell I was really uncomfortable, and a bit discouraged. He walked around with me a second time, and I had a closer look at the equipment. I could distinguish some stuff that looked familiar, it was just all the seats looked so high, and the pull-down bars were just metal with no padding. I know if I just took my time and calmed down a bit I would see more stuff that I recognized. I just had a lot of emotions going through me, and I even felt a bit of defeat. BUT I quickly wiped my mind clean of the feeling, because I am not going to let myself fail at this.

We are going back to the gym tomorrow night, and we're both going to do some weight stuff. Pete said he would stay with me until I felt more comfortable with everything, and I am so grateful for that. He's such a peach.

Anyway, I am so proud of myself for finally getting back to the gym tonight! And that I was able to do some cardio without any pain! Yay! I guess if it really came down to it, I could just use the treadmill for 45-60 minutes and get a pretty good workout that way. But I really just love doing strength training and feeling strong like Buffy!

I, too, sometimes get discouraged with the weight room. You gotta own it though! You are at the gym for one reason - to get fit! Lift those weights and be proud!

Trying new machines have always been a favorite for me!

That's awesome! I tend to stay away from the weight room too, especially when the guys are in there. It's very intimidating.
